Hi guys, I would appreciate some help on picking a holiday destination. Me and my girlfriend (both 30ish) are looking to find a nice romantic holiday destination for begining of September 2011. Not really into resorts, but would still like the option of some watersports (paragliding etc.) Nice beaches and good sun during the day. Don't know if hotel or apt is better but would need a nice pool close by too. Not crazy about the kind of nightlife like you'd get in santa ponsa, malaga etc. We love eating out and some nice bars for day and night. I've been looking everywhere but cant find much that fits the bill. Also we would like the option of renting a car for a day and doing some sightseeing. I was thinking somewhere in Greece or Malta, that kind of place but really don't know. Has anyone got any ideas, or been to nice places lately? Would REALLY appreciate help on this. PS we not exactly loaded so really nothing crazy dear. Thanks!

Just saw your post so decided to sign with with the boards! Just to say I would not recommend Malta( I owned a house there for a few years) , mostly because you said you were looking for beaches. Malta does not have very good beaches, also they drive crazy there but it is an historic place to see. Greece would be more the ticket for you I think, or maybe Portugal.

    Hi Folks,

Well I'm a seasoned traveller... all be it solo for the most part, but the added benefit of that would be I get to see places in their true light...

Now with regard to Greece - if you're looking to do it well and borderline shoe string... I have a couple of options...

Greece itself is beautiful... and if you stay away from the usual tourist spots you have the perfect opportunity to be as romantic as the islands themselves.

Personally, I would get a flight to Athens airport and then catch a bus to Pireaus, hop on the ferry and head to Santorini.... It's wonderfully romantic, and as the ferry time is a cool 12 hours, if you catch it at night you actually are arriving at sunrise and it's just AMAZING!

Also there's no need to book somewhere as there's loads of places available as soon as you come off the ferry... Haggle with them!

I feel in love with the Cyclades and would recommend them hands down... Personally I'm not a major fan of the tourist spot... I prefer to see the places in their natural environment... and honestly I've never been let down.

Other places that would be worth a look would be Zaykynthos, (Zante), Naxos, Paros, Anti Paros...

There's loads of options out there... Have fun!!!

I would recommend Greece. In Zakynthos the resort of Tsilivi sounds like it would suit you. Nice beach, with plenty of water sports. There is a good selection of restaurants and bars. If you want a livelier night out, Laganas is a short taxi ride away.

You could also look at Corfu. Get a flight only deal through one of the online operators, and source a hotel/apartment online. The west coast have the best beaches afaik. Have a look on www.agni.gr website, lots of info. Corfu town is worth a visit some evening. You could also visit Paxos Island for a day.
