Question Re Taxing Car For 1st Time

    Hi all,

I recently got a new car as many of you know. When I bought it, the salesman gave me a form stating that I had 1 month's grace regarding tax and NCT as I was waiting on the VLC and that I could drive it without problem.

I received the VLC the other day and I now want to go ahead with taxing it and booking it in for its 1st NCT. My question is, how do I go about taxing it without getting the "Off the Road" section stamped on the tax form? Would I have to back-date it?

    Thanks in advance!

If the car was not off the road, you are required to backdate the tax to the date of purchase as indicated by the seller. (And as stated on the VLC)

The only way not to, is to make a false declaration for the "off the road" form to be stamped by the gards. Not sure what the penalties if caught are.

    Thanks for that.

I'm trying to do this without making a false declaration, and if I'm honest, without having to back-date it if that was possible :o

I presume it's only a new car to you and not an '11 car?

I contacted the motor tax office as I recently bought a 2nd hand car from a dealer. They gave me the pin number for paying the tax online and said I'll only have to pay it from the date of purchase. This was the 3rd June, and this date was on the VRC.

When I logged in I only had to pay the tax from June onwards. I didn't even have to declare it off road sine the last tax disc expired (February).

Yeah, new to me. I'll give them a call and see what happens. I'd rather do it that way than having to fill out the forms and wait.

Ok well then the only option is to tax it from the change of ownership (or date of first registration depending on if its an 11 car).

The only way to get an "off the road" way to avoid backdating is (afaik) to get the gards to sign your off the road declaration.

I emailed them with the reg number explaining that I had bought the car and wanted to pay the tax for it. They were very quick in getting back to me with the renewal pin number. It was so handy to just do it online and not have to queue up

I also received the motor tax renewal form (this has the pin number on it), which I presume was issued when the VRC was changed to me. Yours is probably in the post.

Lastly, is it not neccessary to send the VLC with the RF100A form anymore?

    No. I did it online.

The VLC is yours to keep safe. The motor tax system would already show that it's in your name since the date of sale.
