Just got a quote on a 99' Astra for a new timing belt for €270 inc vat for the belt and new pulleys etc. Is this price ok?

    Yep, good price.
Is the pump belt driven on them? If so that should be done too.

Thanks and no idea mate, don't know a ton about cars tbh :)

    Will ask though!

If that price is for parts and fitting you wont get much better. As stated above waterpump will need to be replaced also and i'd say your talking another 50 quid for that

That is a very cheap price. Make sure it includes a full kit and a new water pump otherwise its false economy.

And unfortunatly, with the way many garages are trying to cut costs these days, for that price I'd ask for the old parts to gauge reaction.

Belt, tensioner, water pump and Haynes manual for the bones of 120 quid!

Try it yourself and save money while learning about your car.

Only daunting part is removing O/S engine mount... easier than it sounds though.

OP said they knew nothing about cars. Most of us here would be fairly handy with cars but I would not even dream of looking at the belt.

Well then 270 is very competitive. I would agree with the other poster about asking to keep the old parts though.

Assuming it's a 1.4 petrol then the water pump is belt driven , bolands Opel in clondalkin will do the whole lot using original parts for 320.00 including vat - call Adam on 01-4503015
Leave it with the experts !

^^^^ a great price from a main dealer.

Opel are probably one of the cheapest for main dealer service parts, especially with their trade club.
