changing jobs and maternity leave

    Hi

I am going on maternity leave at the end of July and have lined up a new job for when i am due back from maternity leave.

I know that I am not legally obliged to say anything to my current employer about my new job until the last month of my maternity leave, but feel that morally I should let them know that I wont be returning.

But - heres the thing, if i give my last month (pre-maternity leave) as my notice period, will i still be able to claim the standard maternity benefit? as I wont have my p45 for approx 2 or 3 weeks after I finish up here, and all the maternity benefit forms state that I need to submit the form 6 weeks before commencing maternity leave.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

your leave will not cost your employer anything unless of course they are giving you additional payments(moral issue). Also your entitlement is based on your last full year earnings based on your P60.

Proceed as normal and give your employer the full months notice that you probably would have in any normal circumstances.

To be honest (although I probably wouldn't be too comfortable about it myself) I wouldn't say anything to the current employer just with the chance of new job falling through.

You really don't want to be left looking for a job with a baby in tow. I am doing it at the moment, not fun.

I can see where you are coming from with this one.. but have my contract signed etc with the new employer, so think I'm fairly safe on this front. I work in IT so there are lots of job opportunities about at the minute so even in the worse case scenario I could prob find something else to tide me over.

Also I think that i'd wreck any chances of getting a reference if I said nothing to current employer until the last month of maternity leave.

Best of luck with the job hunting - what industry are you in?
