Thought I'd start this thread a week ahead of Bike Week to give some of the events a bit of advance publicity

There's a 2 page spread in today's Irish Times extolling the virtues of cycling

Full details of next week's event's can be found on the Bikeweek website, and include:

June 18th: Family Day to open Bike Week 2011 at Eyre Square from 11:30am
June 19th: Bike stunts in Galway’s Eyre Square shopping centre
June 21st: Electric bike challenge to Howth
June 22nd: National Cycle to School and Work Day
June 24th: Fade St in Dublin will be closed off at 9pm for an open-air exhibition of cycling videos

Also (and I hope this isn't considered shilling), the Dublin Cycling Campaign have organised their annual lecture as part of Bike Week - starting at 7pm on 20/06/11.
They'll also be announcing the winners of the Golden Pedal awards for this year.

I'll be elected Membership Secretary this evening at the AGM, so I'll be able to give the forum a proper push after that. It's been lying fallow while we try and convince them how powerful/useful boards.ie really is! :D:D

    IT’S DRIER THAN YOU THINK

Readers in Galway – and anywhere along the western seaboard – might want to look away now. One of the common misconceptions about cycling is that you will end up arriving to work absolutely saturated three days out of every five. This is not true at all. According to Met Éireann, someone from Dublin who cycles 15 minutes to work, five days a week, will get wet on only four days out of every 100. Even if you live in a wetter part of the country, you can buy good, breathable rain gear for less than €100.

This is really something that needs to be made clearer, shouted from the rooftops as it were. It really does not rain that often, and you mostly do stay dry while commuting over here.
While anyone who cycles regularly will know this I think it's still one of the biggest hurdles for most people in starting to cycle to work.
    IT’S CHEAPER

A bike good enough for the daily commute will cost anywhere between €250 and €500. Add the cost of the lights, €25; helmet, €35; rain gear, €100; and lock, €50 and you will spend around €600. If your commute is just 8km each way and you usually drive, then you will save around €400 in petrol costs alone over the course of a year. According to the National Bike Week people, the savings on tyres, servicing and repairs will be around €300 a year.
Don't forget insurance, depreciation and cost of your time stuck sitting in traffic too

That narrative looks like an edited version of the one on the Smarter Travel Workplaces website, which states:
    Cycling Make Cents!

Buying a decent bike and kitting it out costs less that the annual insurance bill for a car.

A good quality commuting bike will cost you roughly €250. Lights will cost €25, a helmet €35 and good quality rain gear will set you back roughly €60. A secure lock will probably cost you €50.

All in all, that's an attractively small layout for the wheels that will always offer you a quick, easy and low maintenance means of getting around.

For an 8km (5 mile) each way trip to work in Dublin, the bus fare saved will be around €780 a year.

Petrol costs saved for an 8km (5 mile) each way trip to work in Dublin will be on average €450 a year. And maintenance costs saved (tyres, servicing, repairs) saved will be around €380 a year. This excludes any parking costs saved. It also excludes the standing costs of owning a car - depreciation, insurance, etc, which the AA estimates (2007) at a staggering €4,500 a year for a small-medium size car.

funny how they also cut the estimates from 450 to 400 and 380 to 300, needlessly underestimating the cost of car ownership and overestimating the cost of cycling (60->100). Bad journalism there methinks

As part of Bike Week 2011 there's going to be a clown on bicycles flashmob happening next Wednesday morning on the Walkinstown Roundabout. The flashmobbers are meeting behind the Cherry Tree Pub (just off the roundabout) at 10.45 ready to strike at 11. Everyone is invited. Just dress up and come along with your bike (Bells, horns, whistles, vuvuzelas, wigs balloons etc a bonus). All 6 feeder roads will be closed to motorised traffic for 2 minutes so the event is safe for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Come along earlier if you require face paint and a red nose. I'll post a link to the youtube video asap after the event. Spread the word:)

Check out Psyclown.Round facebook page for updates.

North Tipp Wheelers will host two events for Bike Week:

On Sat 25th there will be a family cycle to nearby Dromineer for a picnic on the shores of Lough Derg. Registration (free) is @ 1.30 at the Eire Og GAA grounds. A draw will take place at the picnic for two bikes, sponsored by Moynan's Bike Shop.

On Sun 26th - the club will launch its new Sunday morning spin structure where three groups will leave the Cecil Walk car par (9am) Group A will be for beginners and will do 20 miles at approx12/13 mph, group B will cycle 30 miles at an average speed of approx 15mph and group C will cover apporx 50 miles at apporx 18-20mph.

I think from the time this post was made that it has rained almost every day (in Dublin anyways, which I think is the driest part of the country iirc).
