Beginning as a DJ and need to progress

    Hi Everyone

Im DJ Culchie, Im from Kilkee in County Clare, i began to dj last year i was bored at a time i couldnt do anything as I were goin through physio.

To cut a whole biography short, I ended up discovering cloudcasting, and dj software, and I started mixing, and making my own stuff, its very time consuming mind.

Over time, chancing my arm I suppose Ive become more succseful, my cloudcasts have had good listenership, and since this April, (I dont know what way to look at it) but have been working voluntary for Wheee FM www.wheee.fm/cms/ an electronic online German radio station, I can tell you there lovely people, especially Sebastian the owner, i just upload a forthnights worth of shows and each show gets broadcast 3 times a week. BRILLIANT!!!

At the moment I am just a bedroom dj, no equipment, just using free software on my netbook, and clueless on getting to the next level, right now Im looking for other stations to take me on whether its unpaid or paid.

My dilemmas are, and I hope you can help me is where could I loan equipment, aswell as getting booked. Im on Jobseekers Allowance, and cant afford the equipment yet, and wouldnt know what decks to use FULL STOP.

Is there a DJ agency out there that will take on rookies?

And another thing, Its so common I see that every online dance station does not pay its djs, I find it frustrating having to take so much time and burning of electricity to feckin make one show, so if any of you out there know any paying stations, id be happy to know.

Looking forward hearing your comments :-)

Like on an apprentice scheme? Not a chance.
How would they make money from you?

It's all part of the joys of starting off DJing.

Why would they pay you? What are you offering to them?

yeah DJ Culchie is a really, really bad name

send around some mixes to club night promoters (make sure theyre relevant), offer to play a few warm up slots for free or something.

You could ring 2fm. They should be able to sort you out with a slot no problem. One of their big name Djs vacated his morning slot last year and they haven't properly replaced him yet. You should also head over to Ibiza and ask to speak to Sven Vath. He'd probably sort you out with a residency in Cocoon. Dont be shy, them lads have loads of money so ask them for a couple of grand a night to start off with and see how it goes from there. Finally if all else fails you could demand a gig in Tripod. They'll even let you bring a load of your mates along to listen to you. Hope you have great success in your chosen career:)

**** NO!!, I so want to be professional dj, thats what I aspire to be, Im just shocked Ive gotten away with so much murder by being half arsed. Im gettin good at beatmatching now (I THINK)

I started out djing mainly by accident, i have a radio producers certificate ( with distinction) learned my "put it together in a hurry while riding on the seat of your pants" style of radio, from a philosophy, poetry and comedy show me and another lad were doing.

From what I learned, combined with being unemployed just 3 years gone, been recovering from a knee operation (which went wrong) and had just got broadband, I stumbled into DJing, so being a chancer gets you places.

From what I have seen in my research, such as this link: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1388431/pcdj_reflex_3_track_auto_beat_matching/ anyone could be a dj.

My earlier sets i had to do in a hurry, the little netbook I have cant hold the stress of Traktor, or Virtual DJ, becaue this awful static stammer noise happens, like a man pulling up his zipper while fed through an oscillator, ITS ****IN AWFUL. So I had to use Kramixer, as I dont get static any noise, probably cos it Linux based :-).

Thanks for that buddy, when I read this I was like WOOOOAH!! SVEN VATH!!!. Well I suppose I am a chancer, in with a penny, in for a pound, I will take your word for it, get in contact with these folks, and see the outcome.

Ill keep you posted :-) THANKS

Thats a good idea, ya know what Ill do that.

But with the Culchie thing, its been lucky, if I change it birds will fall out of the sky, more earthquakes will happen in Chile haha, Im supersticious. I am a Culchie, im proud of it, no one else has the name, so thats why I took it.

a dj name like that would go down well in Copperfaced Jacks seeing theyre all fellow culchies that go there :-)

Heres a link to one of the shows, this is the 2nd ever where instead of just mixing music, Im talking, I dont sound too confident as my broadband was cut so couldnt get info on the djs, so I had to make it up as I went along LOL :-) http://www.house-mixes.com/profile/mashtobi/play/godl-10/

Just like in politics, if you are choosing this as a career & not out of something driving you from deep inside you will either fail or end up playing shíte to appeal to the masses, or both.

you took my comment out of context, no, my style would be sourcing white label and brand new stuff, I may once in a while play something commercial like the end song on my next show, which is Save The World by Swedish House Mafia.

Surely a lot of big name djs dont play commercial, shur it wouldnt be exciting, it has to be the style you play, and by picking it random like I do.

Take the day to see what goes with what, then the only left that matters is having good sound levels and staying on top of the beat when beatmatching.

Hmmm, Funny that! I thought to be a good DJ you had to be able to bring the crowd on a journey physically, mentally & emotionally, starting with the right tunes, to build up to unleashing the peak of the set with tracks that have the crowd bursting with exuberance & ecstasy, so much that if the power suddenly failed you may have a riot on your hands, & people leave the venue talking about it with there peers all week until the next time come round & come hell or high water you will be there again!

Or is that the oldskool requirment for DJ's?;)

Personally i adopt a "like what i play or leave" attitude.

Empty rooms all over the place can attest to this. :D

Wow. Ok, em. Wow. No, I can't, sorry.

Song choice is grand. But thats about it. Your beatmatching is just atrocious to be honest. I'm shocked your received the level of praise, airtime and false optimism from the online radio shows you've emailed.

On a more positive note, keep working at it. Invest in some decks and keep practicing. You've reached your limit on your current set up from the sounds of it. No one is born a DJ, granted its a skill that some people are naturally good at, but don't go around with a ego on your shoulders. You have a long way to go.

That pretty much sums it up alright. Are you even cueing up the tracks? Sounds like you're just lashing the cross fader without even trying to synch up the incoming track
