its been a day of upsets as Armagh also beat Down in the hurling to qualify for the Ulster hurling final. Well done to them for the work they are putting in.

Fair play to Armagh ( some peolpe thought they only did football..... amazing what a bit of effort can do;))
Great day for the underdogs.... and Limerick came close aswell!

You'd be surprised of the hurling strongholds in the so called weaker counties. South Armagh and in particular Keady do their best for the ancient game.
Four roads in Roscommon is another area in a football mad county that promote the small ball.

Down, along with Derry, have gone way off the pace in Ulster in recent years. It wasnt that long ago when both Down and Derry were winning Ulster titles and competing with Antrim tooth and nail. Now sadly, Ulster hurling has gone the way of Leinster in that Antrim are light years ahead. Whether this is due to the demise of the game in the likes of Down or down to Antrim's excellence, I dont know.

However, this is a great result from Armagh. One of the few counties - along with Mayo - which have established themselves as tier II teams in recent times. Hopefully they give Antrim hell in the final.

That's true. Oran & Tremane would be other areas in Roscommon which would be out & out hurling areas. Same goes for Toureen in Mayo and Burt in Donegal.

Their only league win was vs Wicklow who won the division so might be interesting to see the betting patterns in both games. Don't wanna knock their achievement but when something like this happens in the middle of a recession then questions need to be answered.

Down were competitive enough in the league (bar the total hammering they got from Clare) so I find it hard to believe that they have gone back so much in the space of a few weeks.

Would be like winning an AI for Armagh, reward for a lot of hard work put in.

To be be fair Armagh got to an u21 ulster final last year so you are being a little harsh. Don't forget also the team you mentioned Wicklow got to the Christy Ring final.

yes its amazing the the strongholds of hurling in football dominated counties the likes of keady spring to mind in armagh but also middletown and madden and all around that area seem hurling mad.Good complexs aswell for clubs as if they are trying to out do the soccer in the north

The Wicklow game was the in the last round of the league and they had already qualified for the final so I am raising doubts about that as well.

Very true. Just hope they gove a good account of themselves in the Ulster final. I don't belive they will win it, but as long as they are not thrashed by Antrim, then this year can definalty be considered one of progress.

maybe this result is a sad reflection on the standard of Down hurling at the moment. Not trying to take away from Armagh's victory, but on paper Down should have won this match with a bit to spare..

Like to add my congratulations to our hurlers. I never seen that one coming, and it is some going to turn around what was a seventeen point deficit to Down in the Christy Ring Cup a few weeks ago.

There has been mention here of Middletown and Keady - also just like to add Cuchulainns of Armagh City, Sean Treacys of Lurgan, Keady's near neighbours Derrynoose and Killeavey in South Armagh who all do their bit to keep the hurling flag flying.

That's an Ulster Senior, Under 21 and Minor Final appearance in recent years!

    Great stuff!!
