I recently purchased a pair of shoes online from china and was charged €53.89 including shipping and insurance of €13.35. When they were delivered I was told by the delivery company that there was an admin charge of €28.00. Does anyone know if this is right, im not sure what its for and why it is so expensive? In the future how do I find out how much this extra cost is before I buy online?? Im worried now as ive bought a couple of bits online for a family wedding and am afraid ill end up being charged a fortune in these admin charges. Im only new to buying online and thought custom charges would be the only extra cost! any help would be much appericated!! ;)

The admin charge is probably related to irish VAT @21% imposed by customers on the delivery company. Sometimes delivery companies charge a flat fee for customs as it's too complicated for them to deal with individual VAT rates. If you order from EU countries then you will only be charged VAT from the country you purchase from and not VAT for bringing it to ireland. Outside the EU you may be charged VAT or a flat rate admin fee from a delivery company

The invoice I received from the delivery company reads VAT at 11.06 and other charges at 14.00 making a total of 25.06 with Vat on that at 2.94 bringing a total in at €28.00.
I did order a dress from china although not from the same company and never got charged any extras when I received it, so was confused to be charged on this one (the dress was roughly the same price as this purchase) and now Im abit worried about other things I ordered.

Just a small correction. That's not always true. If you buy from a large enough dealer who does more than a certain amount of business with Ireland (don't know the exact threshold), you have to pay Irish VAT.

Thanks I didn't know that mdebets

@bell2000, VAT can be hit and miss although plan for a hit and you wont get shocked

Personally I would not buy anything direct from China. Too much risk of it being fake, expensive or impossible to return, and you risk VAT charges when entering Ireland.

Oh, and add one more: customs can seize anything they suspect of being fake.
