It's up to yourself really, but cleaning and caring for road rash with shaven legs, is a lot easier than unshaven legs, so if you are confident that you will not crash, don't bother, plus it shows off your toned legs better when you do shave ;)

Cyclists will tell you they shave their legs because hairs carry infection and road rash is easier treated on hairless legs (maybe true) and/or for the aerodynamic effect (don't even go there - no point in having deep section wheels and then negating the efficiency of them with leg hair!).

But the real reason is, as referred to in an earlier post, toned legs look more toned without hair. There is some comparison photos on the 'net, it is true!!!!

So am I saying that cyclists are the greatest bunch of posers? Never!

I recently trimmed the hair on my legs.I shaved my legs and hated the way they looked.Trimming the hair is a better look for me.

I'm pretty sure my girlfriend would leave me if I started shaving my legs. She hates it enough when I shave my face.

I swore i wouldnt do it - then you crash take loads of skin off and you realise why cyclists shave. Once you do it once i doubt you ll go back i know i wont

Originally pro riders did it as they were getting massage every day and it is easier without hair. It was then realised by the French that aesthetically is was "Super", hairy legs and Lycra really doesn't look good. Many rollerbladers and runners over-here also do it, and I believe that triathletes also shave their chests, something to do with cream?

I'd definitely say a mix of this and the road rash, bandage etc thing.

Even from the point of view of putting suncream on your legs - it takes about 4 bottles if your hairy. I've two lovely red knees after the long weekend - there just wasn't enough suncream to go round...

Yep, that's one of the main advantages as far as I'm concerned - I used to give my leg hair a weekly 'number zero' with the trimmer for that reason when I lived in Australia. I'm heading to Mallorca this summer and will probably trim for that too (and endure the inevitable slagging on returning home!).

Everyone else does it because it looks better. That's why I do it. Anyone who claims any other primary reason is lying.

    This!

I'm coming back to the bike after a 20+ year lay-off, and I appear to be hairier now that I was back then.
I used to shave from ankle to boxer-shorts height back in the day and I don't remember it looking particularly 'odd' (if you know what I mean :D), but doing it that way now will leave me with a deeply attractive 'furry-boxer-shorts' thing going on, which I'm not entirely sure about.

What do the hirsute Euro guys do???

The massage point arose from many decades ago when the balms they used would stick to hairs making it difficult and uncomfortable to apply - it's a red herring nowadays though

Is this why you're heading to France this summer Captain? To find yourself a more 'organic' lady?
