World Cup 2010 - South Africa

This began exactly one year ago today. The year has absolutely flown by IMO, but what are your memories of the World Cup?

It wasn't the easiest on the eye, there wasn't much attacking football and the vuvuzelas were a massive annoyance to most :pac:

IIRC the weather was mostly very good over here and I personally had a great laugh watching the games with lots of BBQ's and plenty of craic with mates.

France's awful showing was a joy to most Irish fans. England confirmed what most already knew, i.e they weren't as good as the media were building them up to be and struggled big time. Germany's attacking football was a joy to watch in an otherwise pretty defensive tournament and Holland surprised me a lot by getting all the way to the final!

The team I enjoyed most were Ghana. I was absolutely gutted when Suarez made that cracking save from a header and then Gyan blasted that penalty off the crossbar. A whole continents dreams shattered by one kick :(

All said, even if it wasn't the most entertaining it was still the World Cup! I still can't believe how quickly the past year has gone by.

I can remember watching a game of football with some friends, after the WC ended and there was something... wrong. We realised about 15 minutes in that there were no vuvuzelas. scary how quickly we just accepted it as fact.

    Lots of memories...

    Tshabalala's goal
Gyan's penalty shoot out kick against Uruguay
    Yakubu's miss from a metre
The bird perched on Algeria's crossbar against England :pac:
    South Africa winning against France
USA v Slovenia - great game
    Van Bommel escaping yellow cards
    Netherlands come back against Brazil
    Germany

Granted it was no 2002, but better than 2006..

The ending to the Uruguay-Ghana match was vintage world cup football. Overall it was pretty mediocre. Im not a person that hates on every tournament, i usually love every single one but i just couldnt get into this one. It was no Germany 06. It felt like a souless world cup. It was also ruined by a lot of ego tripping managers that left out their best players.

I remember feeling very sorry for Ghana allright. The noise of the vuvuzuelas really annoyed me and i hope its never hosted in Africa again for that reason alone. The matches were all pretty bad in fairness.

Saying/posting "haters gonna hate" should be a capital offence. It haters gonna hate, are lovers gonna love?

It wasn't the worst World Cup, but it was far, far from the best.

It wasnt the worst world cup by far nor the best. For me the best was the 1982 world cup - a great finals.

86 for me but that was my first childhood one.

North Korea for me was the story, scared Brazil and then getting hammered by Portugal!

Uruguay, Chile and Paraguay all did well, German re-emergence, another French meltdown, Holland over achieving for a change, England under achieving again.

Best matches probably Spain Paraguay, Spain were damn lucky and Uruguay Ghana.

Don't forget the defending champions failing to qualify for 2nd round by finishing bottom of their group

Suppose it was a surprise considering the group, with France also not getting out, that was a first I believe.

Great achievements for Slovakia and New Zealand in that group too.

1990 was dour, SA was far better, but that's more a reflection on 1990.

Worst I can remember, going back to 86

    Unfortunately, the ultra cynical final!

Worst I can remember, going back to 86

86 was brilliant so maybe 1990 suffers because of it. 2 of the 3 best teams teams in modern football history never to win a WC playing each other, France vs. Brazil, epic stuff.

I always remember some cracking long range goals, the Soviets, Denmark with all the talent, Maradona of course, poachers in their prime, Lineker, Butragueno, Sanchez, Voeller and even Belanov.

2002 was a terrible world cup, 2006 was a good if not a great one

Off topic, but ESPN Classic are showing the 1970 World Cup Final now. For anybody who has never watched it, it is a good insight to past World Cups. Particularly watching Pele shank a free kick about 70 yards into the sky :pac:

Great world cup, by far the best since and including 1990 for me.

    1994 was my favorite.
Great attacking players like Hagi,Romario,Bebto,Baggio,Stoitchkov all stepped up to the plate on the big stage & put in some dazzling displays.

The final its self was pretty boring but overall the quality was a big improvement from the previous World Cup.

I've a few good memories of the tournament:

France's performance was quite enjoyable, not because of Henry but because I hate Domenech as a manager. How he had that job for six years is the unfunniest of jokes.

Spain's performance was a joy to behold. I thought they played their game perfectly.

Holland were a disgrace and I can remember grudgingly enjoying the German's style, for once.

The Suarez save was my favourite moment. It was the ultimate sacrifice for Uruguay and it paid off.

2002 was the world cup where several of the top teams went crashing out early , that to me spells bad news for a world cup

1998 was a great world cup
