The tournament kicks off today with Group A starting with Belarus v Iceland at 5pm
and then later the hosts, Denmark are in action v Switzerland.

Tomorrow is Spain vs England ;) Both are favourites for fairly obvious reasons. Just look at their squads! :pac:

    Belarus v Iceland

Anyway looking at today's games Iceland are top goalscorers in qualifying which included a demolition of Germany. They have gotten rave reviews for their style of attacking football. Hoffenheim star and playmaker Sigurdsson is the one to watch, a lot of Iceland's play goes through him. The kid has the potential to be player of the tournament. Forward Sigthorsson, who scored 15 goals for a fairly average AZ Alkmaar team this past season is another one to look out for. I'd be be fairly surprised if they didn't make it out of the group stage and into the semi final. Their lack of tournament inexperience is the one thing to really hold against them

Can't say I know too much about the Belarus side except what I've read today truth be told. They had a good record in qualifying obviously and overturned a two goal 1st leg deficit v Italy in the playoff. Key thing to note about them however is the fact they are missing their key player Yurchenko. He scored a brace vs Italy. There are another 3 starting XI missing players too.

Should be a good game anyway going by previews as both playing attacking football. Iceland are obvious favourites to win the match and qualify for the semi final.

    __

    Denmark v Switzerland

Gonna be fairly brief about the Denmark game for timing reasons but I'm looking forward to seeing Eriksen and Nielsen for the home nation. Denmark's hopes hinges completely on the two players really, if they don't get going they're in trouble. Oddly enough, just looking at Soccerway, they haven't played a game since 2008! If your one for superstition, the hosts for the past two Euro u21's have done very well however, Holland winning it in 2007 and Sweden losing on penalties in the semi final in 09.

Switzerland have the likes of Shaqiri (who was excellent for the senior side vs England recently and scored a goal against them), Frei, Khalifa and Sommer in their ranks. Fairly decent all round side who I think can surprise the hosts and are an underdog for winning this.

What's so special about England's squad?

Not much of a crowd in the stadium in Aarhus. Edit-Starting to fill up a bit now. :)

Hopefully the tournament will be here in 2015.

Neilsen is the one player to watch IMO. England or Spain will win it though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,471 ✭✭✭✭Oat23

I wasn't planning on watching but I guess I should since Hamburg signed Mancienne. I don't even know where he plays for them but I'd like to see him sitting in front of the back four.

What's so special about Spains ?

What's so special about Spains ?

Two World Cup winning squad members (Mata and Martinez) and Champions League regulars (including players from the Barcelona squad). Their goalie is 99% sure to be Manchester United's #1 Keeper next year. Then add in the vast successes of Spanish under-age squads recently in which many if not all of these players will have been involved.

Surely you can see why the Spanish squad is being highly tipped?

Fair crap match so far, badly needs a goal

Course I can , I think England have a great squad but that's only because i would watch the premiership I suppose . I believe England have a great record against Spain at U21 level.

Makes no odds to me who wins be nice to see a few united players do well thoigh .

Beaten by Czech Republic in the groups.

In fairness its an incredibly difficult competition to qualify for (winning a qualification group only gets you into a playoff) and luck of the draw plays a huge part as well - almost certainly some of the better teams failed to qualify.
    C'est la vie.

The same as the last 40 years when it come to tournaments, i guess.

I dont know why but they really do set themselves up for a fall anytime the get to the finals of a competition. They really blow themselves up. Cant they see that this is why many people in many countries dont like them.

They are doing the same this time, but are already using a few excuses if they dont win, in that they dont have Carroll, Wilshere, Richards, Gibbs and a few more.

How many minutes on the field did the players that they are missing played for them in the qualifiers. Do they thing it is fair to drop a few players that might have played a fair bit in the qualifiers so that they can draft in players from the senior team to play in the tournament now.

They last won the Euro U21's in '84 so it's 27 yrs. ;)

well in defence they have smalling, jones and walker. in midfield they have henderson, muamba, rose, rodwell, cleverly, cork and albrighton. up front they have sturridge and wellbeck.

thats a lot of premier league experience. not massively special, but its fairly good all the same

also, i will be going to the final of this and maybe the ukraine/spain game

Was referring to all Tournaments since they won the world cup in 66, not just under 21 or under23 or what ever.

Watch out for the Czech's in this one. Their coach is very sweet on this bunch of players especially Kadlec & Moravek.

They were the only team to come through qualifying undefeated.

Why isn't Necid playing for the u21's? I know he plays for the seniors and is in the middle of the season with CSKA but I was sure he'd be at this, looking into it and he has barely played for the u21's at all.

England vs Spain is going to be an absolute cracker. Martinez, Capel, Parejo, Bojan, Mata, De Gea, Valdes, Muniain, and Thiago. All lauded youngsters, can't wait to see how they perform against the EPL youths.

Muniain will definitely surprise people who haven't been watching Bilbao, I haven't seen much of Ander, and Parejo has dropped off the mark, but all those kids were so highly rated at one stage or another, so it'll be interesting to see can they continue on from Spain's golden generation.

Ireland will be playing in the U19 Euros next month - just thought I'd throw that one out there. Should be on Eurosport.

Also afaik the top 3 in both the groups automatically qualify for the next u21 World Cup so gives all the players something extra to play for.

Just looking now but I can't find any link, I only heard it a few days ago. It's the 2013 u20 World Cup, I don't think there is any u21 World Cup.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_FIFA_U-20_World_Cup

If you look at the qualifiers from Europe there is 6 teams, top 3 from both the groups in the last u19 Euro's.

Interesting that Eriksen off Denmark made his u21 debut last night even though he's made 14 senior appearances .

England should have brought Wilshere Carroll and Richards .

They would have but Liverpool and Arsenal didn't want them to.
