I just sold my car in what must be record time, leading me to ask myself..................did I price it too low?

I posted the ad on DD around midnight last night and it was sold by 13:30 today. I woke up this morning with 23 missed calls, 8 text messages and 2 voicemails. I had people offering me money before even viewing the car , not that I was complaining obviously :).

I would be interested in hearing from fellow boardsies if I priced the car too low considering the responses I got. Link

I can't believe you got that much for it  :)
If that many people wanted it for the money you put it in for, then yes, you had it too low. Just be glad it sold! There's plenty of cars up there not selling.

No, its a very high mileage car so looks fine to me.

I'm not expert on car prices though.

Don't get me wrong, I'm delighted it sold so fast. I was sure I was going to have a hard time selling it, if at all.

I'd say the majority of prospective buyers were taxi drivers! An economical diesel saloon for 2k ish will have taxi men ejaculating.

How much did you sell it for?

It's too old for a taxi.

I sold a 1998 VW Caravelle taxi with 360,000 miles on it on done deal in 6 hours. It was in good nick, but very high mileage. I thought I had done the same, priced it too low, but I reckon I wouldn't have got much more for it by asking more and haggling.

50 quid shy of the asking price.

Similar prices on donedeal except for this dreamer

If you had people biting your hand off for it then yes you priced it too low. A car is worth what people will pay for it.

True. Guess I just got really lucky. Maybe a lotto ticket is in order tonight ;)

Would I be a cynical person if I thought someone bought it with the intention of selling it next week with 127,409 miles on the clock? :o

A cars value and what its worth are completely different things now. I have been looking at cars in that price range for the last while and the biggest thing on your add is the NCT. People seem to think that once a car is NCTed its going to be working perfectly.

Most of the cars of that age for that price that I have viewed have no tax, no NCT and no service history. None of them have even been clean!!

I'm not surprised that your car sold quickly because you offered something better than the rest of the cars in that category. If youd asked more for it though it would still be for sale as it would be lost with all the other cars that there just isnt a market for any more

Thanks. That's exactly what I thought about poor quality ads. I've seen plenty of them as I've been looking for a replacement car. No wonder there's a thread dedicated them :D

Prime candidate for a "haircut" - expect to see it on donedeal again shortly! I reckon you priced right for what it was.

It is too old to BUY and use as a taxi. The 9 year old rule (not 10 years) only applies to cars already licensed as Taxis which are renewing the license.

If somebody already has a 12 year old (for example) taxi they can renew the license on that car but if they change cars then the "new" car must be at least 9 years old.

Ive sold a number of cars the past couple of years and on all occassions the first person to view has bought. The reason ? fresh nct a little tax plus service history with a well detailled ad. to many crap ads on donedeal ie will fly the nct/ no tax/ crap pictures or ads with no mileage / service history info etc.
its simple imo if you want to sell have nct/ tax/ well presented car with good pics and plenty of info in the ad.
well done op on the sale.:D

Sometimes it's better to let it go a little cheaper initially than start knocking a couple of hundred off it every week to gauge interest, it's gone now you have the cash and can move on. For every 10 calls you receive, maybe 2 of them are in a position with cash to take the car off you, others will mess you around and negotiate over the phone with no intention whatsover of viewing or buying the car. Very well presented ad you put up and with cars I have previously sold spending a couple of hours getting nice photos and a well presented ad aids the sale hugely.

Its patethic how many ads just leave out stuff like milage, NCT, tax and even pictures!! Do they think if they leave the milage field blank nobody will ask about it?
If they leave the price out then they should be prepared to get nothing but stupidly low bids, personally, I'll just ignore anything priced as POA.

Also, I dont know anybody that has bought a car because it was advertised as:
    1) First to see will buy
    2) had one careful lady owner
    3) no nct but will fly through the test
    4) priced low for quick sale

Shifted a 03 comfort line with 250 on the clock for 4 grand earlier this year. Think it might have been a bit low. What did you replace it with out of interest ?

Nope not record time. I put an ad up on done deal today at 2pm for a mate. By 5.30pm the mate rings me to tell me that he has cash in the hand. OK he settled for 40% less than the asking price but thats because he wanted shot of it asap. Have to say donedeal is the way to go. His phone has been hopping!

Sold my mother's old car on adverts.ie... had the first offer after 5 minutes, an increased offer 15 minutes later and the guy came to pick it up first thing next morning.

Price was a bit low probably, but it was sitting on the driveway unused and had no NCT and she wanted it gone.

It's amazing how bad some ads are.. I took plenty of pics of the car and wrote up a decent description. Took me all of 10 minutes.

Must be a passat thing ... I sold my 02 TDI sport within 2 hours  a while back... Had huge spec (uk car).

ud think only ladies drove cars in this day and age and are selling them..

most ads now have "one careful lady driver/owner"

as if im searching by "lady" and not by what car im looking for.

This in particular when I see it in ads annoys the fcuk out of me. What qualifies a lay person to make such a comment. Even a qualified mechanic will not always be able to make that call accurately. I be saying to myself this is the car that will not pass NCT never mind fly through the NCT when reading such ads.

Still shopping for a replacement. **Have a few makes/models in mind but it'll be a diesel and has to have cruise control.

** I'm lying. If I had my choice it would be a BMW 320d touring but they're out of my budget :(
