    Hi all ,

I just want to find out a few people's opinions on what type of optics are good for deer hunting . I have a Schmidt Bender 8 x 56 30mm with A4 reticle . Is this scope adequate for all stalking situations or is a variable power better in some .

    Thanks Lads

could not use a better scope for deer stalking, all that you will ever need, top quality with more than enough magnification, will not go wrong there. Well wear.

For deer stalking, the traditional magnification was a fixed 4x. That's all you really need.

Most people will be shooting deer closeup - within 150. Even out to 300 a 4x will do fine on a large target.

I think a lot of people overcompensate with magnification and bell sizes.

At 300 yards a 3-9x would be handy.

The only issue I could see, one that has happened to me, is you are on the higher magnification and deer unexpectedly pops up close to you. The higher magnification will limit your field of view and catching up to the deer may be difficult. Yet, another reason to learn to acquire targets with both eyes.

I use Variable power for deer stalking, 5.5-22x56NF, I used to use a 6-24x50 Swaro and a 2.5-56 Nikon for stalking.

I prefer variable mag as I like to neck and head shoot if the opportunity arises as I prefer cleaner carcasses.

Only you can choose what scope to use for stalking.
Will this be your first season?

if i could have more than one rifle. my dedicated stalking rifle would have an 8x56 S&B on top.
excellent glass and enough magnification to get you out as far as you will ever need;)
