ACCA Option papers

    Hey folks,

I know it's a bit early for this but I was just looking for a bit of advice on the option papers for ACCA. If i get through the exams i'm sitting at the moment (which is a fairly big if), i'm hoping to sit p5 and then either p4 or p6 but I'm not sure which out of those two is more manageable. Any suggestions and also, and suggestions on good lecturers for these subjects in the Dublin area?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Hi Wickla,

Avoid P6 at all costs - its like doing all 14 exams at once... to manage the volume and complexity of the topic over a 3 month period is incredibly difficult.

Check out the "accountancy" forum for more info.

    BEst of luck

Moved from N&F as that seems to confirm that this is accountancy related.

Hi maybe this has been covered before as I'm sure this is a question most people have had to ask themselves when making a choice. Could the moderator help us out here? Thanks!:)

I dont know which option paper to do. Its between p6 and p4. But i havent heard of anyone doing p4, and EVERYONE is saying stay away from p6. P4 is not in Galway either, which means id have to go to Limerick or dublin! HELP!

What do you need help with?
If you your not prepared to go to outside Galway for P4 then you can write it off and do P6

I did P4 from Galway - totally home study no revision classes & passed first time so I wouldn't write it off just cos its not in Galway. Its not a subjective subject, is highly loaded to calculations & so if you learn the stuff well you should be able to pass. Plus its harder to misunderstand the question with this type of paper. Just a note - I failed P6 & P5 :( so have done most of the options at this stage lol

Thanks very much for yer replies. I suppose my biggest problem is deciding between the two. If i take p6 i've a massive risk of failing as the papers have been awful - saying that it could be the examiners last paper so she might go soft??!! i have an interest in tax but it wouldn't apply directly to my job. With p4 it wont be in galway - that's not such a big deal but in the last sitting it was in limerick on a thurs eve, which isn't ideal! i don't finish work until 6pm. This subject would be more relevant in my role...also high failure rate. There are pro's and con's to both - i just cannot makeup my mind. Its my last subject - im so close to finishing i don't want to make the wrong choice!!

P6 via class would require even more work than P4 homestudy , IMHO.
And you still have the high risk of failure for p6.

I also liked tax at F6, never worked in it though, but being so close to finishing if ii fail in June, I will do P4..I could not go through that again.

How about doing P4 homestudy and going to a revision seminar in Limerick.

Thanks for your input. I will think about doing p4 homestudy - always preferred the classroom setting as i am not too sure about my ability to teach myself haha i wish p6 wasn't so bloody hard to pass!! was the june sitting you're first attempt at p6?

    Yep its my first attempt.

i guess its best to listen to what has worked for "you" before as regards homestudy/class and then factor in the difficulty of P6 combined with your general life circumstances.

you have plenty time to make final decision, but at least you have a sense of things at an early stage.

Also note that there isnt an "official" book for P6, so that hasn;t helped anyone pass the thing

I did P4/P6/P3 in December 2010. Passed all of them first time.

I believe, the most important - are you really interested in those subjects? Are you studying only to pass exams, or you really want to learn smth? i was interested in tax, and also investment management, and had no problems passing them.
P.S. i did home study on all of them.

Thanks Jannise, passing p3/p4/p6 is very impressive! Are you working? I am studying to learn something - not just passing but since this is my last exam i'd like to pass first time!!! I'll wait until timetables are out before i decide! Thanks for advice.

    I am working full time.

I believe if you choose the subject, that is of interest to you, it would be easier to pass, because you wouldn't have to force yourself to read. it always worked for me.

I also will only have the option papers left should I pass the June exams... I am working for a financial services company & see myself staying within this industry so was thinking P4 & P5 are the most relevant to my situation. anyone agree / disagree with my assessment?

I have ruled out Tax (P6) as I was exempt from F6 and have not looked at tax for 7/8 years so I think the difficulty level would be unbelievable for me.
I don't see myself working in Audit but am I limiting my future options if I don't do P7? It is hard to anticipate what opportunities may arise in the future & I did score very well in F8 & P2..

I am really torn over what options to take and if anyone can offer any opinions I would greatly appreciate it...
