Alrite guys, my friends and I are heading to fiji for 10days on the way to Australia. We were wondering what islands are best and what is the best way to make the most of the ten days we are there for. Iv done a small bit of research and was told not to stay in the main island as its a bit of a dump and nothing really worth seeing there.
We were thinking of heading for beachcomber for the first 2 nights and take it from there!

If anybody had any info or suggestions on where to stay or what to do that would be great!

    Thanks! :)

For peace and calm, I'd recommend a tiny island called Na-na-nui-ra. I suspect you're not looking for that, so Beachcomber is fine. The main island is good, but I didn't get a sense of much partying there.

Fiji is not a place for partying, especially for a group of Irish on their way to Aus. I stayed there for 2 weeks whilst traveling and was so bored by the end (but bored in a good way - sleeping in a hammok all day!)

I done the Feegee Experience bus tour around the main island for the first 4 days, granted the main island is not paradise, but if you are really traveling to see places then it's important to actualy see how the locals live. The tour basically stops off at beaches, villages and fun random things (including sandboarding) during the day, and stops off in hostel resorts at night where you can get dinner, drink Kava with the locals, and get drunk on the beach with a fire.
We also went on a trek through the jungle and went kayaking, followed by swimming at a waterfall - great craic. The people you meet on the trip are all bang on too, I'd seriously recommend it

After 4 days I spent 10 days wandering around all the little islands, which is more than enough time. 2 weeks on those little islands will make you so bored. Seriously, Holoween night I was on a tiny island and there were only about 10 us us, I had 3 beers and went to bed by 10! They wake you up for breakfast at 7am and everyone goes to bed early!

One of my best experiences though was swimming with sharks... went to a reef about 5 miles out to sea and swam with reef sharks while the local was feeding them fish he just speared... we were on a rikkety old boat on the way back when a huge hammerhead shark swam under us!! You can also dive with larger sharks too (tiger, hammerhead and nurse sharks)

Beachcomber island is good craic, its just a giant hostel on an island so small you can walk about it in 5min!

thanks alot for all that good information and links, we will definatly check out that bus tour, it sounds pretty cool and a must do!

it sounds like theres alot if things to do during the day which is sweet!

we'll be doing plenty of partying in america en route so a few relaxing days will be needed anyway so im sure we'll enjoy fiji alot! :)

is the island expensive, food etc and the daytime activites like the swimming with the sharks?

    Thanks again!

What would be a good budget for a week in Fiji? Not including flights but staying in the cheapest accom possible. Do they have thai style beach huts?

well guys heading here in 3 weeks or so, probably going to book the fiji experience for 5 nights and do our own thing for the other 5 nights!

anyone have any more help or advice to give to get the most out of our 10nights?

..and is it expensive? would you be living comfortable on €1000 for 10 days?

    Thanks!

Fiji isn't really a party place, you're right about the mainland its a bit of a dump. I'd reccommend trying to get up the Yasawa islands, theres a ferry that goes up there every day plus they're your stereotypical south pacific islands. There are some party islands on it and you could do two or three of them. It will take a day to get up and a day to get back from Nadi. You could also try Robinson Crusoe island.

A grand should be plenty, if you do the islands you can get packages that include food and accomodation so only additional costs would be beer

Thanks for that, wasnt planning on heading to yasawa islands as i hadnt heard of them, but will definatley try make it up there now for a couple of nights after looking into them!

ya we're heading to robinson crusoe island for 2nights as it was only €60 for the 2nights accomodation and boat.

this is what we booked, a few people recommended it, any thoughts on place on the list?

When I was there, we didnt do anything on the mainland at all, Mantaray is in the Yasawas and I stayed there. Its run by Australians, its really nice but lacking a little of the Fiji atmosphere. Its definitley not a party resort. If you wanted to do the chillout thing this place http://www.octopusresort.com does it way better, probably the nicest place I stayed in a years travelling, but not a place to go on the lash. It would be no problem booking your own trips to the islands when you get there. Most of the backpacker hotel will have someone to advise you and you could mix a party island with a chillout island. FeeJee experience is good in that it takes the organising out of it for you, I don't know your age or what you want but profile of people on it is normally the gap year type.
