Oh no, I am seriously panicking. I've no personal email access at work so I emailed my OH from my work email this morning. Just after lunch he replied with a really really long email but it was interspersed with the filthiest dirtiest hot and horny chat (I'm talking really X-rated) but he sent it to my work email by mistake. All my work emails are monitored And the content is so full-on I'd be fired on the spot....eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. What am I going to do? I get on ok with the IT guy here but I don't know whether to say anything or not? I deleted it really quickly (not before sending it to my personal account) but do I bring it to his attention or say nothing. I'm making myself blush with how filthy it was. Am so worried!

I wouldn't be concerned. You have no control over what other people send you, so provided that the content of the email you sent was OK, then you can simply say that your OH sent it to the wrong address. It would be like someone delivering something to your workplace instead of your home - you don't have any control over mistakes that other people make.

Also note that when most companies say "email is monitored", what they really mean is that a system somewhere is logging everything, there's nobody actually reading every email that goes through the system checking it.

Most of the time, systems will only trigger alerts if someone is sending huge amounts of mail (like 500 a day or more) or sending huge mails filled with pictures and videos. It would extremely rare for any company to be scanning the text and triggering alerts if someone has some naughty language in their email.

Say nothing. You've deleted it without responding, you've done nothing wrong.

    No big deal

You received it, it's not like you sent it

When the IT monkeys finish telling people to turn their computers off and back on again they might see the email. Might be flagged but unlikely.

    You won't be fired
