Changing from 5 to 4 days - what wage decrease?

I'm due to go back to work next month after maternity leave and will have a chat with my manager soon to confirm coming back. I'm hoping to come back on a 4 day week (using parental leave to get day off) and I'm just wondering what kind of cut I can expect to see in my wages. Is it as simple as minus a fifth? Is there a way I can work it out approximately?

Second question, I hope to get pregnant again in the next year. My company gives the full amount of pay for the 6 mths maternity leave. I'm wondering if I'm on a 4 day week what do I get when I go on mat leave again - do I get full pay of 4 days or of 5 days? Hope I phrased that question clearly.

    Many thanks

I'm not sure there is a definite answer anyone can give you as each companies policy can differ. Normal circumstances would suggest you will have your wages cut by 20% (assuming the company facilitates your request to reduce your hours in the first place). I would expect your maternity entitlements would also be reduced by 20%. Maybe Citizens Advice can advise you.

Again, just an assumption as companies own policies can change. We had to increase our hours of work from 35 to 37.5 a few years ago and we all got a pro-rata pay increase for the additional hours. A couple of years later in the thick of the recession, our colleagues in another of our company's offices had to add 2.5 hours to their working week and they got no pay rise at all.

Thanks Ongarboy. I'm from Ongar too!
I've been asking around today and I've been told my gross pay will be down 20% but because I'll be paying less prsi my take home pay will be down by something like 15% which isn't too bad.
And as I'll be using parental leave to take the day off each week my salary is unchanged and so I'll still get the full 5 day maternity benefit from my company. This is what I've been told anyway.

My company will confirm this but I haven't asked for the 4 days yet and just wanted to know what the story is before asking for it. Hope they'll give it to me.
