I have a drive to sort on a tight budget, at the moment its just earth and few stones fairly well compacted since we built it a year ago and ran out of money for landscaping....
Will be doing some landscaping over the weekend and have a digger in - but have an offer of 2 lorry loads of tarmac/plannings of a main road they are doing locally. Would this do as a driveway surface for a bit till I can get it fully tarmaced? Would I need to put a base in for it first?. I can get a wacker to compact it.

yes it's a good temporary surface - will actually do you for years.
You will need 6-8 inches of stone underneath it though, where you have stripped back the topsoil.
Wacker will do the job but will be slow, maybe better off hiring a roller for a day or two.
