Carbon ageing

    Hi,

    Been looking around for a new bike for the last few weeks after a crash, and probably going to go for carbon.
    I've come across a high end (I think ?) carbon bike the same as this in a LBS

    but kitted out with last year's 105 as opposed to the Dura Ace shown. The bike is new and the price is €1,500 (before haggling).

    My question is, should I be put off by the fact that its a 2 or 3 year old model ? Has carbon technology moved on that much in the last 2 years and would a 2011 frame be that much better ? Or is it a steal and I should jump on it straight away ?

    I wouldn't be worried about it being an older model if you can get a good deal. The performance differences will be insignificant (in fact, maybe only the paint job has changed). The one issue is the re-sale value - I would push that angle when you are haggling.

    By the way, you missed a golden opportunity to title your thread "Carbon Dating".

    In some instances (e.g Scott) I've seen newer year equivalent models 'downgraded' in spec and materials over older ones (yet prices increase).

    I do enjoy reading reviews (usually rehashed press releases) of new models in which all the improvements over previous models are reported thereby essentially making the last model sound totally $hit and deficient. Then next year, the latest and greatest will in turn be portrayed has having shortcomings now improved upon.

    Still, I think we all fall for this b0ll0cks!
