Trojans

I've been running ClamXav on my mac for ages now and it never flags anything of note. Recently my email was compromised so just to be sure everything was ok malware wise I removed ClamXav and put in Kaspersky for mac. Kaspersky has found oodles of Trojans, all in the Java cache. It's been removing and deleting them but keeping a log.

Not trying to sound dim but are they something to worry about if ClamXav never found them? And if they are, is there anything I can do to prevent them? I'm more used to this kinda stuff on my windows pc so although I've had my mac years I'm a bit of a n00b on the security end of things.

Those are all Windows trojans. They are nothing to worry about. Even if they were Mac trojans, they can't do anything unless the user lets them.

You don't need AV software. All they do is scan for Windows malware. I've been running OS X since 10.0 came out 10 years ago and I've never used any anti-virus software. They are a waste of resources and are little more than a placebo. If/when malware on the Mac becomes an issue you'll know.

That's what I was hoping - thanks so much! I've noticed a lot of articles recently saying that macs are the new target of choice for malware and whatnot and when my email was hacked it tipped me over the edge.

The main thing you can do in terms of security is make sure your system software is always up to date. Also if you use Safari, disable the option to automatically open safe files. And never enter your admin password when prompted unless it's for an application that you trust.

Keep in mind, of course, that if you run Windows on your Mac, it is just as susceptible to viruses and other malware as any PC. But they won't affect the OS X side of things.

Re: getting your email hacked, you should use different passwords for all your online accounts. If you need help with this, I'd recommend 1Password.

Finally, I'd just add that this issue of malware/viruses on the Mac comes up frequently and it's a controversial one. Don't necessarily take my word for it. If you do a search of this forum you'll find loads of debate about it. Here's a link to a recent thread about the "MacDefender" trojan:
