Looking at some of the sad stories in the reporting welfare fraud thread,it makes me wonder is there much point dragging people and businesses through the courts in getting the money that more than likely will never be recovered to their original amounts.

I know i will hear the stories, nobody forced anyone to have a bigger house or a bigger mortgage during the good times, the aftermath is the bullying debt collectors on behalf of banks are tormenting the small people, driving some into suicide and mental institutions whilst leaving fraudulent retired politicians and bankers to sit on their massive pensions.

A debt wipe on mortgages and other loans seems to be off the table as someone would get massively burned,

Would like to hear what would boardies here would do if they had the reigns of power..

Ya see this is one thing I don't think a lot of people get, the ones that are saying that they'd never report benefit fraud, firstly reporting the fraud stops fraud so you stop these weekly fraudulent claims and saves the state money immediately. The recovery of funds is mostly meant as a deterrent to people that are thinking of breaking the law, they'll come after you and make your life awkward.

The government should finish the Ghost Estates and sell off the bloody houses, not give them away, sell them and profits go to the State. It would create jobs and save these estates going to rack and ruin and end up costing yet more money to demolish in a few years.

Go after any corrupt politicians, developers or bankers and throw them in jail for any jail-able offences, make examples of them.

You make it sound like reckless spending and greed should be encouraged...?

The problem is, put simply, if the good times ever did rise again, we would screw up again in exaclty the same way we did before.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

What we should have done back in 2008, walk away from them. Start afresh with our own currency.

I think you are wrong. Whether one partied or not I think we all received a huge wake up call with the arrival of the IMF

As far as I see it..

The bankers, the last government, and the people that bought houses that they couldn't afford got Us all into this debt.

The tax payers,in fact nearly everyone now, except the bankers/government are now bending over and taking it good to pay it off.

    No problem. :D

The same recless derrivatives trading is still going on in this country and accross Europe. The difference is now speculators are no longer borrowing from our banks anymore. The US has put measures in place to deal with this, why can't we.

Lenihan and Biffo should be hung, along with all the rest of the traitors in Kildare Street who put the debt of private institutions onto the taxpayer.

Mightn't do much for our debt problem, but it'd make me feel a helluva lot better.

There never was a boom - there was ridiculous availability of credit.

Didn't matter who you were, what you did, what you earned or what your credit rating was like the banks were literally throwing money at us.

I don't know how many times I was 'automatically approved' for this that and the other without me even applying for anything. You wanted €400k 110% mortgage to buy a 2 bed apartment they would give you €500k so you had enough to furnish, buy a new car and go on a 3 week holiday to the Caribbean while you were at it. Some shopkeeper in Carrickmacross got €32million to build a shopping complex. €32million! And he had a Spar or the likes!

Ridiculous availability of credit meant people could buy what they want so there were more jobs, more houses being built, high rates of inflation, etc, etc. So we took it and spent it, we spent every penny and more that we did not have. Our credit rating was savage because people were spending like fcuk so the banks borrowed more and loaned us more and the spiral contiuned until it all ran out.

Now there's no money left, no credit, and everything is ridculously overpriced. It's as simple as that.

I don't agree. The IMF were useless. I expected them to come in and force the govt to slash wasteful public spending but we are still running a huge deficit and the IMF are taking a back seat. Hopefully they will start to show some teeth soon.

Credit is such a weasel word.

If I could make one change I would outlaw the use of the word for financial products and replace it with the much more accurate term "debt".

Nope - if Irish people are guilty of one thing other than mentioned, it's very short memories.

One FF govt dangling a few carrots and we're back again.

    Divide and conquer, etc.
Report welfare fraud, sure, why not, it's fraud, however, the fact that the government have people up in arms over welfare fraud of all things currently shows what a great job they are doing at controlling the people. It's embarrassing that it is this easy to manipulate the population.

    • Denationalise any bank that has already been nationalised.
    • Abolish the bank guarantee.
    • Reduce the minimum wage.
    • Abolish the Central Bank.
    • Default on all sovereign debt and give the two fingers to the IMF.
    • Withdraw all bail-out funds to banks and never ever ever bail-out another bank again (make it law).
    • Leave the €uro.
    • Cut off all Ireland's connections with the European Central Bank and opt-out of any EU buffer on the Irish economy or the private utilisation of its own resources.
    • Privatise the IDA, Enterprise Ireland and SFI.
    • Lower the corporate tax even further to piss the French off.
    • Annihilate all capital gains tax.
    • Prevent businesses and corporation from claiming tax credits and prevent any loophole that might enable them to pay less tax than the general population.
    • Make all political "donation" of any kind illegal.
    • Introduce a basic rate of tax that residents will have to pay once a year and abolish ALL other taxes including VAT.
    • Essentially try to separate the economy as much as possible from the state.
    • Let the Free Market drive us out of recession.
