I have a Sony Vaio PCG-7D1M That just has a black screen when its powered on!!

It also wont turn on unless it is plugged into the mains and the 3 lights above the keyboard are constantly on!! I've tried connecting it to an external monitor but still no display!!

Anybody know what could be causing the problem??

    Cheers

Have you tried doing a safe boot (to see even in safe mode you can even get text on the screen) ?
    See here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm

Get back to us and let us know how you get on.

I cant even get into safe mode!!:D

There is nothing at all coming up on the screen......It's just totally blank, as if its broken!!

I tried plugging it into an external monitor and using the function keys to get picture on the monitor but there was nothing happening!!

Would this be a video card problem?? Or could it be something else??

If there's no flicker at all from the screen, then its probably the backlight or it's associated high voltage bits.

Just re-read your post. Is there anything at all happening with your computer? If there is no video output at all and only the lights display, then it could be the motherboard. I have one upstairs with this problem, exact same model iirc.

Since you mention that it will only run on mains, try pulling the battery out of it altogether and rebooting with the mains adapter plugged in.

    Let us know what happens.

Just tried pulling out the battery and the same thing happened.......so nothing happened!! :D

There's nothing at all happening when i turn it on (Bar the 3 lights above the keyboard turning on and staying on!!)

Is there any way of determining if it is definitely the motherboard??

it could be the Nvidia problem that a lot of laptops have
it doesn't mention anything about Sony's but they could still be affected and so may need a new motherboard
