    Hey,

Can anyone tell me definitively whether a Ford Focus (it's a Zetec 1.6 TDCI 08 New Model if that matters) needs it's timing belt done at 100,000 Kilometres or Miles?

I keep reading it's 100k or 10 years, whichever is sooner, but people dont often clarify whether its mls or kms, and even those that do, disagree. It makes a difference to buying one which has 50-60k Miles on it.

    Thanks

That's a lot higher than I've seen reported before but if it's true that'd be lovely (:-D), but I don't think I'd trust one to last 155,000 miles...

    Any other takers...?

I've seen them last longer than that!

I wouldn't buy a car over 90k with out a timing belt replacement, it;s sure to go soon'ish after that. 100k no way.

This crowd have a pretty good Q&A. They say 100,000 miles or 10 years.

I called the Ford dealership garage in Cavan with regards to my Ford Focus (1.4 petrol). They said 160,000km for timing belt. Just call any Ford garage yourself if you want to be sure about your own model.

Henry, that is just the first question in a long list of questions.
I posted the link for the OP to scroll down through and find his own model.

    It is over 200,000km, I think it's 240,000km.

    1.6 and 2.0 diesels are 240km's.
    1.8 diesel is 200kms.
    The 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and older 1.8's are 160km's.
The 2.5 turbo petrol is 200km's

All should be replaced at ten years if the mileage has been reached with the exception of the 1.6VTI which is 8 years.

Any rough ideas on how much a replacement timing belt would cost for a 2001 ford focus with a 1.4 engine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,076 ✭✭✭gman2k

    OK,
In laws run a garage, and they done timing on two Focus cars in the last month.
1st car was 1.4 petrol with nearly 100k miles on it. Timing belt was very near to shot.
2nd car (my own) was a 1.8 diesel with 100k miles. The existing timing belt was like new apparently! (I've owned the car since 40k miles, and it had not being changed before then.)

€300-€350, full kit and water pump.

Thanks a million for all the replies - they confirm the good news that it should be years before the car I'm looking to buy needs a new belt! :-)

Seen a belt snap on a 2002 1.6 Petrol with 96000miles on the clock.

Well it's a guide so I suppose it isn't perfect but from the point of buying even 96K Miles is fine with me - still gives me 45K+ to play with :-)

I just wanna make sure it's not something I'm gonna have to do year one - barring any weird occurrence.

When your getting it serviced make sure the mechanic has a look for oil leaks around the timing belt belt area as oil on the belt is bad. Sometimes the camshaft seal and crankshaft seal can leak. Its rare but possible.

Likewise! Can you please send me a PM with the garage info? I'm not sure if I need the timing belt replaced. We bought the car at about 80/90K and didn't ask! (Stupidly!!) Now its 113K and probably should either do it or make sure it has been done!

    Thanks,
    Audrey

I recently bought a 2002 Focus. Low mileage 50 only, but I wonder should I consider getting the timing belt done in 2012 as it hits that 10 year mark?

Is age really much of a factor, compared to mileage?

Nissan doctor, I probably wont be getting it done for a while, but 300 sounds very reasonable. Please send me your details if you get a chance.

I'd wait till December 21, 2012 and see how you get on:p Ah no really I'd say you would be grand for another while but I wouldn't go years over the ten mark maybe just one max. Its not recommended but i'd try it considering it has low mileage.

    @Condra
Just an FYI I had a timing belt go on a 03 1.6 petrol with 85k miles on the clock earlier this year. You just never can tell I guess but if it was me I'd be investing €350 in a replacement just for the peace of mind.

Age is definatly a factor as rubber deteriorates and hardens over time which can lead to failure. In most cases the manufacturers are being conservative so on a low milegae car, chances are a belt due for change at 10 years would be fine for 11 years but as has been said, some cars, the Focus included, are suffering some early failures so its worth having it done on time.

I have a 2006 ford focus 1.6 diesel (Peugeot engine). Its an English import hence clocked in miles. I checked with my local garage and he checked in the manuals and stated timing belt to be changed after 200,000 KM so approximately 124,000 miles. Currently I have 121,000 miles on the clock and no issues to report but getting a quote to have it replaced.
