i know what your thinking.... and no... not a boy racer.

i'm looking for the one 2006 and upwards ... the more recent model.

I've being looking at all the usual sites like carzone, donedeal, adverts and the likes and the cheapest one i can seem to get is advertised at €8,500.00

Is that about right lads ?

anyone know where else one could look for this ?

I remember there was one advertised there about 2 weeks ago for €6,999.00 and i went to see it but it was full of scratches and dents and needed a whole mirror replaced and was a bit scruffy on the inside... also didn't trust the dealer.

im looking to get the hatchback 1.3 or 1.4 petrol. 4 door non sporty and none "S" or "R".. cant go any higher than that !

    anyway,

any suggestions would be brilliant and also what you all think is reasonable !

    thanks all

They're all fairly dear second hand, so if you want a good clean example then you'll have to cough up.

The 1.8 would be a loy better. Not a huge difference in real world running costs over a year either.

I wanted the 1.3 or 1.4 for insurance reasons :pac:

*EDIT*: insurance is about €300 more on a 1.8 so might actually be worth a punt... petrol drink much though ?

Nope. I had the saloon and got over 40mpg regularly. Great car and almost as roomy as the same generation Accord too.

This is a fairly decent spec 2007 1.8 litre model and it has a bit of tax on it too:

Nice cars, and if past reliability is carried on from previous models it should be bulletproof, but.....

Personally id be wary of going for a 1.3 in a newer civic tbh, im not sure on the stats but wouldnt it be a false economy? personally id check out the larger engines if they fit your budget you may find it better on juice and only slightly more expensive on Insurance etc

    Just my 2cents

im not looking for performance points or the likes with a car... just want to get to and from work day after day and i've talked to people who own these cars and they have never had a problem with them... just keep it maintained and serviced and they run forever !

the 1.8 is around the same price range.. (actually quite a few of them cheaper than the 1.4 models) but the tax is quite a bit higher... the insurance was only an extra 200 or 300 quid which was good like.

but just to keep costs to a min i'll have to stick with a 1.4 and choose from one of the 3 above (provided i can get them to 9K or less)

    cheers man !

I just bought the 1.8 litre version a month ago, 2007 model and can't be happier with it. I got the Sport executive version.

One thing, check if it has a spare wheel.
By default, Honda consider this an optional extra.
Instead you only get a hidden compartment in the right hand side of the boot with a can of tyre weld and an air compressor to pump it up.

I paid €200 to get a spare space saver wheel from the Honda dealer in Clonskeagh for peace of mind soon after I bought the car ( I didn't buy the car from a Honda dealership).

A few little things I need to sort out, the air conditioning isn't cold.
Also the drivers door handle feels like it needs oiling/a bit rough.
I also hear that the manual release of the petrol cap can be a little troublesome in those models.

If you have Sat Nav embedded in the dashboard, check the map version.
It's around €200 to get the latest map DVD from a Honda dealer.

I paid roughly €8250 for a 2007 model in very good condition.

I will be checking these on all the civics i try.

other than that anything i should be looking out for with these 3 i posted ?

what did you do when your were buying your car etc ?

also can you tell me how to get out of the damn thing ? Ive being in about 3 of them and i couldn't get out from inside the car with the door handle.. someone had to let me out or open the window and reach out... and they do work cos others can do it !

    thanks again

I don't have an indepth mechanical knowledge of cars, so perhaps I'm not the best example to follow when buying them.
I gave it a test drive, checked the responsiveness of the steering, gave it an emergency brake test on the test drive, checked the car visually etc.
I got a dealer warranty and 2 years extended warranty so I didn't go for the rather expensive €300+ AA check of the car beforehand.

I paid for a CarTell report, and just checked for any signs of a crash, misaligned panels, etc. Not the most thorough of checks to be honest.
I checked that the dealer was in business in the same place for a few years, under the same garage name.

The items I mentioned above are specific to the Honda Civic.

Ps. one thing, the front grille is quite low down to the ground. It was only after I bought the car that I realised this could be a problem in the snow.
If you need your car in the winter, I'm not sure if this height clearance will be a big issue or not.

I heard it scraping the ground on a big kerb once.
If you've a less than gentle driveway kerb, then this could be a daily issue for you.

    cheers,
    CD

Im not giving you performance advice i was just pointing out that a smaller engine doesnt allways mean cheaper running costs, and it is worth looking at the figures before you make up your mind, a 1.4 will be working alot harder to pull that weight around than the larger engine equivalent, which can result in worse fuel economy plus more wear on the engine (depending on driving type) thats all i was getting at

Plus I think the 2006+ Civics have i-vtec engines, so that they switch between performance and economy modes dynamically depending on your driving style at the time.

There's a 6 green LED indicators on the dash which light up the more eco-friendly your driving is... although that generally translates to 6 greens when going down hill and none when accelerating hard.

I think the 2008+ models may have hybrid 1.4 litres engines if you really want economy, but you'll be paying more for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

The Hybrid is only available as a saloon.
