First Aid Do's and Dont's?

I came across a nasty accident this morning between a cyclist on the Luas tracks and a car coming through a junction. The cyclist was conscious, in shock and had a bad head wound. He was taken to hospital in a neck brace, on oxygen, but seemed likely to survive the ordeal relatively unscathed. I'm sure all of our thoughts are with him and the car driver who was also quite shaken by the incident.

I was the second on the scene. The first in fairness was trying to keep the guy immobile despite his best efforts to move/get up while we waited for the ambulance. By-standers were urging us to get him off the tracks. Others were suggesting getting him a sugary drink. My limited knowledge of first aid suggested keeping him immobile (particularly the head), warm, no drinks and talk to him to avoid him losing consciousness if possible. I think it would be useful if someone with medical/paramedic/first aid experience stuck up a post listing do's and dont's for such circumstances.

    Thanks in advance.
