Mixing Shimano and Campag

Right, am going for some Shimano Bar End shifters, which are friction only on front.

Have come across a well priced Campag triple crankset, and wondering if that will work ok with the shifters (and if a shimano FD would work, or will I need a campag one too, providing it works with the shifters)

    What would you guys do!?

Crankset is neutral. Should be no trouble in a campag drivetrain.

Bar End Shifters though .... TT bike with a triple ?

    Excellent news!

    Touring bike, not TT :)

Well for reference, I was happily riding around a full Dura Ace Groupset on a roadbike with a Campag Record crankset. Likewise, a guy I know has been riding a full Campag Record groupset with a Dura Ace Crank for the last 5 years. Cranks are mostly neutral.

Friction shifting on the front should mean you can use whatever front mech and crankset you want (within reason), at least I think so.

Friction, friction, friction!! It solves all lifes shifting problems, as long as you use a road triple mech it will all go swimmingly, but what happened to microshift?;)

The cost was prohibitive in the end! 90 quid for bar ends and brake levers, or 175 for STI's, the 90 wins out :)

Hmm,I see,you couldve went for gripshift and I wouldve made you some special barend gripshifter extensions:-Ptoo late now,oh well!what frame are you building all this onto?

Na, I'm not really into gripshift, and it'd be a little... odd on drops.

It's going on a Salsa Casseroll

Is it baby (vintage!!) blue with matching front rack?

Lovely frames, haven't seen all that many around, built a few in London when I was there, what else is going on it?

The gripshift would be weird,I just like making odd stuff!

Have you ordered brake levers yet or brakes for that matter?

It is indeed the blue one!

Stronglight crankset, and deore rear derailleur/cassette for it. Brakes and levers haven't been ordered yet, though I do have a fair idea (thinking wide, frog type on the front, standard shimano canti on the back and tektro levers) though if you have something nice in mind/in the shop I could well be swayed!

Also may well be sticking a dynamo front hub on, but will see how the budget goes!

Well now that you mention it I have a very slightly used Shimano dynamo hub at the moment it's about two months old, the wheel got kicked in and it was as cheap to replace the whole wheel as to re-build it, obviously not as nice as something like a SON hub but still good, as for brakes I was just thinking you could go with V brakes, Dia compe make drop bar levers that work with V brakes, seeing as you're not going with STIs it's just a thought, but easier set up and better braking power.

i recently turned my Raleigh road bike into a light tourer ,i have shimano 105 front and rear plus dura ace barend shifters,
i have campag sti 9 speed leavers used only for brakes as they wont work with shimano derailleurs .
it takes a bit of patience to get used to barends, the sti shifters are so much better .
btw i bought a great set of wheels from wiggle mavis 319 swiss spokes deore hubs hand made £120 not bad and bought panaracer ribmo tires very pleased with them.
best of luck with the build .

I was considering V's, but am a little worried about tyre/mudguard clearance, but will play by ear (don't have to decide for a little while yet!

I got the rear wheel from Parker International (Sputnik Rigida rims on tiagra hub -deore is too wide for the frame), and front I'll build up with either a dyno or another tiagra hub.

Barends are the best for flexibility/price so I'll just have to use them till I'm used to it! (though there's still a faint chance I'll use STI's)
