They dont - they just have a shamrock type plant as an emblem which means something totally different in greece. Panathinaikos are the most greek team you can get.

BTW if a team has Celtic after it that doesnt mean its Irish. The Celts
funnily enough probably never came to Ireland. The Celts were all over western europe and Britain, France and Spain (You have the team Celta Vigo, for instance).

Neither Everton nor Liverpool ever had a policy of pro or anti Catholic or Protestant.

But Liverpool as a city has a big Irish (and therefore Catholic) tradition. So when Everton was there on its own it naturally had a lot of Irish catholic players and supporters. When Liverpool were formed first, they needed players and they shipped over a number of players from the North of Ireland who were protestants and some from Scotland too, so there was a time when the team was nearly all protestant. But that quickly changed as local catholics joined, and it wasnt long before those with an Irish background were split down the middle between Everton and Liverpool.

You could argue that Stalybridge Celtic are Irish through the 'granny rule'

I remember reading once that they are named after (Glasgow) Celtic, who, even though British, were of Irish 'parents'.

But apart from that the only clubs with real Irish roots are Celtic, Hibs and Dundee United

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,934 ✭✭✭OhNoYouDidn't

I think Dundee Utd can be struck off the list. They used to be called Dundee Harps and wore green, but changed to United and now wear orange...

Floriana of Malta is the only other one. Rovers have a link up with them. Founded by an Irish regiment of the British army.

So really its Celtic, Hibs (although they are ditching the image for free soup) and Floriana.
