I stand by my appraisal of the Arctic Monkeys as yes..."The finest rock n roll band of today".

Based on lyrical content, cultural impact and 4 brilliant albums in a row - as a straight-ahead traditional rock band I can't think of anyone that comes close.

Rock N Roll or Rock which is it?

one good album, slipping lower and lower with every release since. Cultural impact???? and to be honest I think his lyrics have crossed the line from quirky observations into just pure daft territory. example:

    Break a mirror
    Roll the dice
    Run with scissors
Through a chip pan fire fight
Go into business with a grizzly bear
But just don't sit down cause' I've moved your chair

imo, i dont think i've ever seen a band go from being the most exciting bands around, to one of the most boring.

I think there's enough "Roll" in there for them to be considered a Rock N Roll band. ;)

As for cultural impact, you just have to have played in any rehearsal studio over the last ten years and the chances are that the band playing next door are some early Arctic Monkey's rip off. Apart from "Is this it" no other guitar album has had the impact that the debut album had over the last decade.

Well, as far as lyrics go, one mans meat is another mans poison and all that...but I find those lyrics to be witty and the song to be very catchy. I'm sick of hearing the same "His lyrics are daft now" "Why doesn't he write about curry trays and bus-stops" argument. Ask yourself this question, are the lyrics stupid or are you just too stupid to get any value from them...peel the onion.

there just stupid.......and how is that cultural impact? lots of little girls sing katie
perry, does that mean katie perry has had a cultural impact? the fact is they were hyped beyond belief before their first album was even released. we were told they were the best band ever before half of us had heard them. their first album was strong, nothing ground breaking, but it showed alot of potential. but to be honest i think they believed their own hype. they've disappeared up their own ass since. bland bland bland

You don't know what rock n roll is for a start.

Apart from Is This It? Have you listened to more than 4 albums in the last 15 years?

Go listen to a hell of a lot more music.

That's a fair point but we always allow a little discussion on posts and opinions or else all you're left with is a list thread. But i'll accept it's gone a little too far in this thread so...

Back on topic now, no more AM genre-fication discussion. Thanks

While I think M83 will be the top of my list come the end of the year and I've only streamed Japes 'Ocean of Frequency' and I liked what I've heard, the 2 albums I have found rather special this year are 'Tamer Animals' by Other Lives and 'True Loves' by Hooray For Earth

The Big Roar is awesome! Still prefer A Balloon but a serious record all the same. See em in Whelan's last week? Superb stuff! Totally agree with regards King Of Limbs. The second half of the album was ok and Lotus Flower is a beast but poor overall.

    1. Yuck - Yuck
The very first time I listened to this album back in January I fell in love with it and I still have the album on high rotation. It's heavily influenced by the likes of Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo and Teenage Fanclub but rather than have a forced retro feel to it it actually sounds timeless. One of the best debut albums I've heard in a long time.

    2. Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Every time I listen to this album it just sounds better and better. It's not quite as good as For Emma, Forever Ago but it's pretty damn close. Like For Emma the new album has a character all of its own and is a brilliant album to immerse yourself in. You can almost see and feel the landscapes and places that Justin is singing about.

    3. The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar
Their debut mini-album A Balloon Called Moaning was so good I though there was no way they could top it. When this album clicked with me I was proved wrong. This is a brilliant album from start to finish and is jammed-packed with killer hooks and killer guitar lines.

    4. The Antlers - Burst Apart
Hospice was a superb piece of work but I couldn't imagine them making the same album twice. I certainly wasn't disappointed by this and the more upbeat sound works wonders and makes for a very engaging listen.

    5. Wild Beasts - Smother
Two Dancers was great but this album is even better. There seems to be a more electronic influence in their sound this time around, perhaps influenced by Radiohead's In Rainbows. Hayden Thorpe's and Tom Flemming's vocals sound superb throughout, with Hayden Thorpe being possible the best vocalist in the UK indie scene at the moment.

    Honourable mentions:
The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Belong, PJ Harvey - Let England Shake, Ringo Deathstarr - Colour Trip, True Widow - As High As the Highest Heavens and from the Center to the Circumference of the Earth, The Kills - Blood Pressures, Asobi Seksu - Fluorescence, Grouper - A I A: Alien Observer/Dream Loss, Esben and the Witch - Violet Cries

    The disappointments:
Radiohead - The King Of Limbs, Crystal Stilts - In Love With Oblivion, Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

Probably M83's Hurry Up, We're Dreaming; James Blake's s/t; Radiohead's The King of Limbs and Bon Iver's s/t. Hasn't been too exciting a year for me, despite listening to tons of stuff released in the last few months.

Here's a little list I made of the albums I've heard so far this year. The order isn't quite finalised yet.

A Balloon Called Moaning is fantastic but The Big Roar just feels more complete to me. I didn't get to see them in Whelan's unfortunately as I was working all last week and couldn't travel to Dublin, would have been a great gig I'm sure.

The King Is Dead - The Decemberists

The People's Key- Bright Eyes (even if most people thought it wasnt their best, I really enjoyed it)

    Burst Apart-The Antlers

    Distraction Pieces-Scroobius Pip

M83 and King of Limbs also worth a mention

I just got James Blake Yesterday, really really good stuff. I was skeptical 'cause of his breakthrough single job being a cover, then I saw him at Electric Picnic and thought they were pretty good. The album's blowing me away!

And I defo have to get Scroobius Pip's album, going shopping on Sunday

Hasn't been a great year thus far

    1. Bon Iver
    2. Smother -Wild Beasts
    3. Harrow and the Harvest -Gillian Welch
    4. King Creosote and Jon Hopkins- Diamond Mine

Looking forward to Kate Bush's 'Fifty Words for Snow' If it's half as good as Aerial (2005) it'll be worth a listen.

Im a huge Oasis fan and love Noel's new album , but the Beady Eye album was pretty lame if im honest , **** band with a good frontman , poor songs , 4 letter word is a good tune , and the roller was ok but after that the rest is gash.

    1. Bon Iver - Bon Iver

    2. Kasabian - Velociraptor!

    3. Elbow - Build a Rocket Boys!

    4. The Vaccines - What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?

    5. Friendly Fires - Pala

The Naked and Famous and The Strokes efforts were close too.

    Lots of punctuation, weird...

Really enjoying Lanterns on the Lake - Gracious Tide, Take Me Home at the moment, could very well be one of my favourite albums of the year so far. It reminds me of Beach House and Sigur Ros at times and has a really beautiful, dreamy vibe to it. An excellent debut.
