Same here. I love most of her stuff, but don't get this one at all. Stories from the City is far better.

I really love this one. Probably don't listen to it as much as I did Stories From The City back in the day though (but then I have more albums and money now to listen to).

I love the hell out of Let England Shake, but I'm not a huge PJ fan otherwise to be fair.

    That is all.

No no no no, this years mumford and sons /mgmt/ passion pit / the kooks /the view / insert any from the myriad of boring albums from the last 10 years.

throw away indie with nothing special about them imo.

Wouldn't be a fan of Mumford and Sons or the likes. Have been seriously impressed with the Foster the People album and they were the best performance I saw at EP.

Most listened to album this year for me just might be The Horrors - Skying.

I'm gonna throw 'Yeah Nothing' by Squarehead up there. Hit after hit.

A Creature I Don't Know by Laura Marling is brilliant, the girl just gets better and better

My AOTY so far I think.

This is strange because it's the complete opposite for me. PJ Harvey never did much for me but i love 'Let England Shake'. It's obviously a move for her that some like and others don't.

    The top five for me:

    The Antlers, Burst Apart
    PJ Harvey, Let England Shake
    Wild Beasts, Smother
    Beirut, Rip Tide
    Cut Copy, Zonoscope

Picked this up on Tuesday and I have to say its a very good album.
Listened to it a lot in the last couple of days and she really is very talented.

Album of the year for this so far though is Let England Shake.
Wouldn't be a huge PJ Harvey fan but I think this is a great album.

The polly album is pretty fantastic. More i listen the more i like.

The new Horrors album is fast becoming one of my favourites. A really really amazing album from a band on top of their game at the moment. The only song that seems to bring the album down slightly is the second last song 'Monica Gems' which sounds a little out of place and inferior to the rest of the songs on the album. Other than that amazing stuff and sounds better with every listen.

Goblin by Tyler is an amazing album but you need to listen to Bastard before to appreciate it fully

    Gruff Rhys- Shark Ridden Waters
TV On The Radio- Nine Types Of Light

They're the only albums this year that I've listened to several times.

More worth mentioning would be the latest from PJ Harvey, Wild Beasts, Marissa Nadler, Radiohead and Girls, although I haven't heard them enough times to have a solid opinion of them.

Actually had a chance to listen to more music the last few weeks. Other albums i quite like.

The new wilco is fab. Lyrically i don't think it's up there with previous efforts but musically it's a beast.

    Nicolas Jaar and Tim Hecker.

Wu LYF and Wise Blood. Really like the wise blood stuff ive heard, very short album/EP

Looking forward to hearing the new Jape, Land Lovers and M83.

Great year for music thus far.

Nicolas Jaar album has been on repeat for many days for me. It doesn't sound nearly as weird as some would describe but that doesn't mean it isn't just lovely.

MAke sure you have a physical copy of the bugger, it's being pulled due to an issue with one of his samples.

Takes a while to get into it but great album imo.

    The Horrible Crowes - Elsie

Been listening to it all week and it's excellent, though I'm a huge Brian Fallon fan anyway so it was always going to be a winner.

    Wooden Shjips - West
A Huge step up in terms of production from the Shjips. Transcendent Trance Rock.

Arctic Monkeys -Suck it and See
Flawless, Classic songcraft from the finest Rock N Roll band of today.

Kurt Vile - Smoke Ring For My Halo
Raggedy like The Velvet Underground and Swaggery like The Stones but not in a "Swagger Jagger" kind of way. Though overall it reminds me of a classic Neil Young Record - Honest, Hazy, Folky, Just full of soul. The Discovery of the year for me.

    Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues
Beautiful collection of songs with a more organic feel and darker edge than their first LP.

    The Horrors - Skying
Brilliantly titled. Like taking a warm bath while on ecstasy.

Honourable mention to MGMT's Late Night Tales compilation of their favourite songs - some real gems on there.

PJ Harvey - Let England Shake
    Anna Calvi - Anna Calvi
And So I Watch You From Afar - Gangs
    Fleet Foxes - Helplessness Blues

uhm...last one is a tricky choice so it's one of ....Cloud Control - Bliss Release, Wild Flag - Wild Flag, St Vincent - Strange Mercy. I'm sure I've forgotten someone else I've really liked.

Will go for Wild Flag as my last choice.

Took a while to grow on me but really like the album now.

Currently switching between that and Hurricane Season from Dan Andriano. Been waiting for this since 3 or 4 songs from it popped up online about 18 months ago and it was worth the wait. Dan has a knack for writing a catchy chorus and compared with Matt Skibas solo effort last year this shows how Dan has overtaken him as a songwriter.

That was enough to convince me to go and listen to it.

'Jape - Ocean of Frequency' is a fantastic record... especially the track 'The Oldest Mind'

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,407 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

Wise Blood, EMA and Zola Jesus all worth a listen too. Jape's one is also a real grower.

Yeah I'm really enjoying the new Zola Jesus album. Stridulum II was good but nothing special but Conatus is an improvement and a really enjoyable album. It's a bit too early yet to compare it with other great releases I've heard this year but it could be in my top ten.

I've heard a couple of tracks from EMA and wasn't really impressed. Does her album grow on you after a while?

I just got hooked on a song called Marked. I just love it. Got into the rest of the album through that one song. 20 kisses with a butterfly knife is the other song i really like. Zola Jesus is a better album but i think EMA's has great moments too.
