A few months ago my son got his phone stolen from his gym bag at school and the school didnt find out who did it. I had to go buy him a new one and while was in Carphone Warehouse, was telling the guy who works in there and is a mate about what had happened.

He just sent me a message on FB a few mins ago saying that a guy came in to get the phone fixed (maybe unblocked, not sure) and he copped it was my sons and refused to give it back to him so we wil now have a nice spare android phone in the house for back up.

Am wondering though should I get the guards involved as am sure there is CCTV in the shop and also maybe they have his name from booking phone in to get fixed and take it further.

It really bugs the hell outta me that little scrotes could go through another pupils stuff and steal from them and as am an unemployed single mum it killed me having to buy him another phone. I would shop my own sons to guards if they did something like this as its despicable behaviour.

Let's see. An item was stolen and you think you've found the culprit. Ah yeah go on ahead.

The wee fecker took another lads phone that day so it wasnt a once off either.

Also it had been his christmas present and as he is only 13 and in first year it really upset him.

Why bring a mobile to school, anyway?

What if it wasn't his phone, and the carephone guy has basically stole it now?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 34,418 ✭✭✭✭hondasam

It's probably not the person who stole it who brought it to the shop.

If his school was anything like mine they'd be delighted to know who's at it!! I'd get in contact with the guards. Nothing worse than people who steal things in school. Especially belong to those who know the worth of money!!

Maybe you should get a cheaper phone next time.

Yer man was in possession of stolen property. Did you report it when it was stolen originally? Do you know who the guy is who brought it into the shop? Is he a student at son's school? Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Go down to the Garda Station and explain the situation to them I spose, the kid who took the phone will probably end up getting a caution at the very most though, and more likely will just get a bit of a telling off.

Most kids bring phones to school and as they get a bus home but sometimes I collect them, its handy for him to have it. He keeps it off during the day unless he needs to contact me and switches it on on his way down to the bus.

Am sure it is, coz I bought the phone in there and they would have the details logged under my name, including serial number.

A caution for what, where is the proof he stole it?

If there is solid evidence that it is your sons, then yes I would involve the gardai. The chances are that the phone could have been sold onto that boy, but it's a step closer.

My brother was mugged in town a couple of years ago, if he had any inkling who the scumbag was he would have done something about it. You have a chance to. I wouldn't hesitate.

 Of course you should. Why would you not report a thief?

Unless you have already sorted him out yourself, and he is now cooking slowly in a red wine jus. In which case you shouldn't call the guards.

Yeah was thinking that but they still have stolen property.

Was thinking would inform the school on him too

In fairness it wasnt that expensive, coz for this very reason I refuse to spend more than €100 on his phones coz of breakage, losing and now being stolen but its still €100 I dont really have.

I only got a brief message on FB coz my mate is working at the moment but will call into him later and get the full details.

Think I will, am just so angry at the wee fecker.

Maybe waiting in the hope that details of it would be gone and not thinking that the guy in the shop would remember me telling him what happened!

Only thing holding me back is that its a small town and I could end up getting more grief than I need for a sake of €100 phone but its the principle more than anything that gets my goat.

Uh, before you get the Gardai involved, I would verify that it is actually your son's phone. Did he scratch his initials into it or something? If you ring the Gardai and they find out that they've confiscated an innocent kid's phone, your mate could end up being cautioned and/or fired.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Music Moderators, Politics Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 22,360 CMod ✭✭✭✭Dravokivich

Well of course the school wouldn't get involved, why would they? They have no liability over any students possesions.

How does the guy in CPW know it was your son's phone? Did he have a very exclusive model?

Why are you only now looking to get the Gardaí involved when all you've got is someone with a similar model phone? Why were the Gardaí not contacted and the theft reported when the phone was actually stolen?

    Are you serious?

If I was in your position I'd have already called them, unless you have plenty of money to buy another phone if his new one goes missing?

The guy that brought in the phone to the phone store may not have stolen it, but he won't be long saying who he bought it off when the Gardai mention the fact that he handled stolen goods, which is a crime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Witchie

Dont worry I wont do anything til I go in there and check it out. If he was trying to get it unblocked then my son has the pin and would be able to prove it is his very easily but as I said all phones sold have the serial number logged as far as I am aware coz I remember they are always able to ask me which phone I am referring to when I go in there.

If its a small town, it will get around fairly quickly who is a thief also. I wouldn't let it go anyway.

Fnck that. Why protect a scrote? Anyone who gives you grief for getting a thief arrested isn't worth your attention anyway.

my reply was in relation to a caution for the kid who stole it not who is in possession of it.

op did not say a kid brought it to the shop.

Will go verify it is the right one before I do anything but I know this lad in CPW wouldnt say something to me unless he was sure so am pretty confident it is it.

I didnt report it at the time, I spoke to the teacher in charge of basketball training which is where he was (after school) when it was stolen, but she couldnt do anything. I prob should have gone to the guards at the time but at least there are witnesses in the school to say it was stolen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,025 ✭✭✭problemchimp

Maybe make sure it's the right phone and culprit first. Accusing somebody in the wrong can be embarassing to you and could cause problems for your son in school, So suppose it is your sons phone, inform the school principal of the situation and make sure either you or the principal inform the boys parents. Threaten to get the Gardai involved and see the reaction from all involved before you actually call them. Usually these things can be dealt with without the Gardai. If you get no satisfaction from all involved, including the shool in the form of dicipline, then call the Gardai. Don't forget to thank the Carphone warehouse bloke for his vigilence.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,512 ✭✭✭Oh_Noes

Report it to the Principal of the school, he/she would be best informed about what course of action should be taken with this. The guards probably wouldn't do anything about it whereas the principal might investigate it and stop it from happening again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭Witchie

Dont worry he will be getting a thank you card and at least a bottle of nice plonk for his efforts.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, will talk to school first and have no intention of accusing anyone of anything til am 100% sure.

The serial code + the boys information is proof enough. The serial code is likely to be how your friend found out alright.

It would cause trouble for your mate. He would only be authorised to tell the Gardai. Telling you could jeopardise any criminal investigation.

I'd ask him if he would put in a call to the gardai for you. I don't see how it would cause any bother for him, if he found this out through his work and reported something suspect.

It's time to get vigilante on this punk thiefs asss. CCTV from Carphone, blow up photo, hang up around the town with "PHONE THIEF - WATCH YOUR PHONE WHEN XXXX IS ABOUT". Set up a dedicated Facebook page proclaiming thief boy to be untrustworthy, and take out ads in the local papers. Even better still get the Carphone Warehouse Guy to give him the phone back with apologies and then as scrote is walking down the street the Guards arrest him with stolen property after "an anonymous tipoff". Then several malicious phone calls should follow combined with a hearty bombardment of hate mail to his house threatening him that sensitive parts will be burned if he ever attempts to rob again. Then, if they have any family pets.....

Ahem..... ignore all the above. Best to call the Guards.

Of course. Theft is theft, no matter how small. If someone steals from you they deserve to deal with the law - that's what the law is for, after all.
