Is it just me or does anyone else notice the irony of some of our broadcasters slagging off people's holiday entitlements. Matt Cooper is certainly prominent in this group but wait, he was on holidays again yesterday. ... Pot, kettle black Matt!

I think the people that Matt may slag off for having too many holidays are those who are paid by the taxpayer. Matts holidays are his own business, he works for a private company and has holiday entitlements.

I don't know anything about Matt Cooper but I always found it bizarre how RTE's star radio broadcasters get at least a full month (sometimes even more) off during the summer every year, in addition to taking holidays throughout the rest of the year.

Thanks for the clarification. So Matt (and his ilk) thinks he has the right to comment on those paid by taxpayers - Gardai, firemen etc I assume. Perhaps he'd like to tell D/ environment what patch of road to upkeep with his car tax or what services he'd like the state to spend with the VAT he pays. Arrogance personified!

Have to agree with ElvisCostello, on this... Matt Cooper works for a private media company, not funded in any way by the taxpayer, and can take as many holidays as he wishes,( or is allowed to by his bosses.)
RTE "Big names", are paid for by you and I, through our weekly taxes and our TV licence fee.
Matt Cooper, or anyone else in the media or in conversation, has every right to bring it to the public's attention.

BTW, what do you mean by.... "So Matt (and his ilk) thinks he has the right to comment on those paid by taxpayers".....
What does the term "And his Ilk" mean ?
and yes, any public employee that has above average fully paid leave for holidays etc, should be brought into the public domain.
We do pay their salaries after all...

The majority of RTE big stars are self employed contractors who hire out their services for a fee. If RTE are not availing of their services they don't get paid. One notable exception to this would be Derek Mooney. I agree with you they do take far too long a break but in fairness to RTE they have tightened in on the situation where most of their big names are off air at the same time. Still not an ideal situation but it has improved.

I was thinking more like members of government etc.

Whose holiday entitlements was he slagging off? You brought it up, so you must know, rather than assume it was Gardaí and Fire personnel.

There are 20days at least entitlements in all sectors of work. That equals 4 weeks or a month. After that many companies regardless of who owns them will then provide better holidays for member of their staff, so anyone can get from 20 - 30 days holiday regardless of their work place.

However this is generally used in the media to beat the public service.

you can be sure that for any half arsed holiday .. none of RTE's top stars are nowhere to be seen.. Tubridy, Finucane and Duffy just seem to take weeks off whenever it suits them.. They are usually then "outbroadcasted" by either Kathryn Thomas/ Dave Fanning/ Philip Boucher Hayes for the period of their abscence, only to resume their throne and resume collecting their pot of gold from RTE..

But I think most of their contracts are up for renewal (if they are lucky) next year, so hopefully some of this indulgence will be knocked on the head then.. RTE should be able to see at this stage that Duffy is waaaaay too long in the Liveline chair and he needs to be moved on..
