Reader for the exams - question

I'm acting as reader for the junior cert exams tomorrow. I havent done it before and Im wondering do I read all the exam paper automatically for the student or do I wait and let them tell me what exactly they want to be read aloud??

In my handbook, it says that I should read only on request BUT it also says that under the 'duties of the reader' is to read the entire exam script to the student.

What should I do? Read the exam paper or wait for the student to appoint what I should read. If I dont read anything technically I'm not really earning my money am I??

I believe the student will lead the way during the exam.Spend some time with the student before he/she begins the exam to discuss whats best. You could begin reading the front cover, outlining the question options and start from there.
Try to create a relaxed atmosphere - the student will probably feel uncomfortable sitting with a stranger so a few encouraging words before the actual exam will help. Ask the Superintendent in the exam centre if you have any queries beforehand.

Did you not meet with your student today?
All ours met with their readers this morning and spent some time with them to feel more at ease.

Read the entire paper, repeating many questions if necessary and whatever you do, make sure the candidate answers the required number/choice of questions. Those who need readers tend to be bad at following exam rubrics.

The point of you being there is to make sure the candidate is not at a disadvantage because of their difficulty, so you may have to read a question or part of one many times.

I agree 100% with spurious. Read the entire paper, ask the candidate which question they want to start, re-read that question and so on.

Be relaxed so the student becomes relaxed - its a big at the start.

Keep an eye on the clock so that the full paper is answered. As spurious said "The point of you being there is to make sure the candidate is not at a disadvantage because of their difficulty."
(Remember you are there to read the question not answer it, so be careful.)
