BMW Key

I bought a 316 in December. The lock and unlock buttons on the key didn't work when I bought it so I've just been using the key manually (the hardship!). Iv seen a lot of people selling used keys on eBay, saying they can be reprogrammed.
Does anyone know if this is possible? I was quoted €173 for a new key, if there was a cheaper alternative Id take it.

Keys cannot be reprogrammed, they will come ready to go from the dealer and may need to synchronise the remote

Try this, one of my keys stopped working and this did the trick for me:

Sit in the car with all the doors shut and windows up with your key fobs (all your fobs need to be done at the same time)

    - With one of your keys turn the ignition to position 1 and back to 0, then remove the key (only do this with the first key)
    - Press and hold the unlock botton and then press the lock button 3 times while still holding the unlock button.
    - Release all buttons and the locks will bounce up and down.
    - Repeat this with the other key/keys (press and hold unlock and press lock 3 times, locks will bounce)

    Hope that helps.

Actually had the same problem with mine, bought a new key off bmw, still wouldn't work, turned out to be a fuse. Both keys work now.

A fuse somewhere in the car / lock? I actually have to replace the whole lock anyway so I'm hoping this might help solve the problem, I just can't afford a new key on top of it

    Thanks for all the responses

fuse in the car, must have something to do with the receiver under the mirror, they said that could have been the problem initially which would have been expensive enough!

Last BMW key I bought was about €140 from the dealer, programmed.

The Hyundai dealer wanted nearly twice that for a buttonless key for a '99 Accent a few years ago!!
