License renewal question

Provisional nearly 5 years expired. If I break 5 then I am required to sit the recently introduced mandatory training which I obviously have no intention of doing. Rang motor tax office earlier and they said I only need to apply for a test and show them the confirmation for them to renew the license. Basically my question is this: Can I just apply, get the license renewed and not sit the test at this moment in time? Simple reason being I do not have the funds the pay for some lessons and also rent a car from a school for the purposes of sitting the test. This will cost several hundred €uro which I basically do not have. I am aware that I will be €85 out of pocket for the test but it is cheaper than paying for lessons and rental for test and also cheaper than doing nothing and being required to sit the mandatory lessons further down the road. Any advice?

Yes I think so. But you can book the test online and set yourself as unavailable for a long period in time - e.g. the next 7 months. If you get a date that's too early, you can then defer it, which will delay it by around 4-6 week - you can do this twice before you forfeit the test fee.

But I'm not positive about this!
