Daily Mail calls for new Call of Duty to be banned

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1390672/Fury-Call-Duty-game-recreates-7-7-Tube-bomb-attacks.html

Ah the Mail, at it again with their "zomg someone think of the children!" ignorance, calling for a game that hasnt been released yet to be banned. It will be an 18's rated game made for adults, marketed to adults and only can be sold to adults, yet stupid parents will continue to buy these for their precious darlings and then be ringing Joe Duffy and the like a few days later with mass hysteria and ignorance.

    from the "article":
An ultra-violent computer game which features explosions and scenes of destruction on the London Tube and at the Houses of Parliament is to be released later this year.

Supporters of those affected by the 7/7 suicide attacks in July 2005, which killed 52 people, called for Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to be banned.

The game's trailer, which is described as 'inappropriate' for children, depicts military helicopters, rocket launchers and black-op style soldiers in balaclavas.

Call Of Duty 3 has not yet received an age certification and shows soldiers running through the streets of London with machine guns while bombs explode and buildings tumble to the ground.

Big Ben is clearly visible as are police cars and a London bus amid the violent scenes.

In one particularly vivid shot, an armed soldier on a truck cuts in front of a Tube carriage, derailing and causing it to explode.

Other scenes show aerial attacks on New York and grenades exploding on the streets of Paris and Berlin.

The game, which can be pre-ordered for £45 and will be officially released on November 8, has a voiceover saying: 'It doesn't take the most powerful nations on earth to create the next global conflict, just the will of a single man.'

Vivienne Pattison, spokesman for campaign group Mediawatch UK, said: ‘I have concerns as these games are hyper-real and take place in a landscape we are familiar with. In light of the fact we have just had the 7/7 inquests, it is in incredibly poor taste.'

One reviewer at gaming website kotaku.com described the latest instalment in the Call Of Duty series: 'Players take on the role of an SAS operative who is tasked with stopping a delivery of weapons of mass destruction at a London dockyard.

'A gun battle ensues, and the agents are chased through the London subway. The mission culminates with a series of unmarked trucks exploding in front of the House of Parliament, releasing a deadly chemical agent.'

Activision, who make the game, said: 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is a fictional action game aimed at mature adults and set in World War Three. The scenes in the game are entirely fictional and are not intended to recreate any historical events.'

Daily mail and banned in the same sentence... Lets just go with it shall we?

He wants to ban it for all the wrong reasons: the game is crap. Not violent. This is violent:

I dont see where the Daily Mail call for it to be banned. I do see where Mediawatch.uk are expressing concerns over the game. People whinge about the Daily Mail for distorting things to suit their agenda. Anti-Daily Mail types are equally as bad.

Anyway, that article backfired. Reading the comments, many watched the trailer and now will definitely buy the game, it drove up sales

Can we please stop linking to tripe from that paper? The internet would be a better place if we all just ignored it.

The game developers are reading that article with delight. you really cannot buy that kind of advertising.

Is it just me or does it read like an actual ad for Call of Duty, rather than an article about it?

Ironically I read the part about there being a bomb going off in London and thought"cool I didnt know about that, gonna be interesting to see how that pans out, cheers Daily Mail!"

Old media hates video games because it has buried them. gaming is the largest entertainment industry now. their death squawks are quite funny, though.

I really don't get this mad obsession AH has with tabloid newspapers. If you don't like them don't read them. It really is that simple!

I think more 'damage' would be done to children if they were regular readers of the Daily Mail rather than playing the game.

"The game's trailer, which is described as 'inappropriate' for children, depicts military helicopters, rocket launchers and black-op style soldiers in balaclavas."

No **** that's why it's rated 18's, why try and get a game banned for adults who enjoy the franchise because some parents don't research the content before purchasing it and then want to shift the blame on the creators.

I don't know why there is this media hype that if your little darling plays a video game they will become the next Adolf Hitler. I would imagine most kids have played shooter games growing up and in my opinion there's nothing wrong if they are 13+. They can be very educational, 90% of my knowledge of WW2 pretty much came from the Medal of Honor series when I was growing up.

    WTF ?

So it wasnt actually any of the 7/7 victims but some unidentified self appointed individual/s claiming to be their spokespeople hijacking their tragedy to pontificate on an entirely unrelated matter.

    Scum total scum !

It's still a ****ing bull**** cause. Those people who were affected by the 7/7 bombings are hardly going to want to play the game, if they are so offended, stay away, simple as that

Wowzer, looks good. I think I'll buy it.

In fairness though, they do have a valid point.
Research shows that the phenomenon of killing of prostitutes to get back the money you paid them skyrocketed soon after the release of GTA, as did random carjackings and killing sprees.

How does Holywood get away with it, I wonder?

Also, didn't a lot more people die in World War 2?

I like how the image caption was "SAS running amok in streets of london" as if they were running amok, and not trying to defend against some kind of terrorist attack.

Can't wait for the whiney mothers brigade to step in. I hope we get some outraged MILFs this time.

How does Hollywood get away with it? Well, by giving in to the rabble rousers. Wasn't there a scene that was supposed to be in the Spiderman movie cut because he landed on the World Trade Centre? I thought generally the English were a lot more lenient with this kind of thing - I mean the film V for Vendetta did feature an explosion in the Subway, the Old Bailey and Big Ben?

Looks like a marketing ploy tbh - print articles with calls for a ban = $$$$

Hopefully they won't remove the offending level from the game as has happened before to on of the Hitman games iirc. Sure this is the same as the hubub about the airport level in the last game which was a way more disturbing level, all this is doing is showing soldiers and explosions in london, if people took a stance like this in the states nearly every big bugdet action blockbuster would have to be banned.

All they have to do is give these protesters an hour playing Harcore Team Death Match online and they'd soon change their tune ;)

I didn't know that about Spiderman. It seems unfair that Oliver Stone can use 9/11 to sell cinema tickets but a game has a subway explode in London and a generic rag throws a fit.

This media hype is stupid and is going to have the opposite effect. For example, when I read the OP and saw 'trailer' I immediately jumped to Youtube to check it out. And you know what? I'll be buying it.

So well done Daily Mail, nice bit of free advertising you gave to the games company.
