When does an oil overfill get critical?

    Hello,

I am in a rush as this has delayed me no end but basically car was recently serviced and I checked the oil and it was about 8mm over the full mark on the dip stick. 1.9 TDI for people who know it.

The garage said that they do it as the engine uses oil but he seemed confused as to what 8mm was so I wonder did he think it was a tiny amount.

Anyway, I have used one of those oil extractors to take out the extra oil and now its back at max. I can not remember the brand but I think it started with S.

The extra oil seems to have taken up most of the bottom level of the tank. So, this tank is say 80cm tall, every 20cm there is a marker for I presume to tell you how much you took out. The oil I extracted just about reaches the top of the first level. I have pics but I can not upload them.

    Anyway, rush!

    I hope nothing got damaged.
I would name the garage but I don't know yet if I am being over sensitive but if Mods are happy and it was a big problem I will gladly share it.

    Thanks,
    bbk

I would reckon 8mm on a dipstick is the guts of a litre of oil.

It is a Sealy 6.5 litre extractor and it has 6 of those markings so it does seem to be the guts of a litre alright.

Overfilling can do as much damage as under filling. Oil does not compress, therefore unnecessary loads will be put on seal etc. If it was my car, I would be discussing this with the garage, they sound like cowboys.

My father failed the nct due to too much oil, he didn't check the level as he had it serviced a few days before the nct. Same story from the garage as above (a main dealer) they overfill as so many people never check and were running out of oil.

I mentioned before on here that min to max on a dipstick is a litre ish on many cars (a quart in days gone by was 4.54/4 = 1.135litre). How does 8mm compare to min to max on your Golf?

    DSC01553.jpg

This was taken when I had already taken some of the oil out.

The top of that little bendy notch on the stick is full and about half way to three quarters the way down towards the bottom notch is "you must top up".

I would say you could look at the top of the notch and the top of the oil level and almost go at least a quarter up again, a half at most. That was around where it was.

What, if anything, should I be looking out for now with the car? Given it has done about 200 to 250 miles with the most part of a liter of extra oil in.

The amount in the picture is unlikely to do any damage in the short term but I'd be looking for a new garage. Overfilling oil and using the excuse that they do it because engines use oil is just rubbish.

The battery light is flicking now also so I best check the connections.

Im just glad I caught it when I did. So much for a very reputable VAG specialist based in Belfast!
