Are there many pentathletes in Ireland? Just saw an interview with someone aiming for the olympics from Ireland, and it sounds like she does most of her training abroad.

Any idea what sort of times they'd hit for the 200m swim and 3k run, and what sort of training times they'd sink into this? I can't imagine its the sort of sport you can do part time (as in, after work ;) ), am I wrong?

I did find it amusing how she entirely evaded answering the question of how you can afford to get into the sport unless your parents are rich.

think its a growing sport in ireland tbh not sure tho,

she does a 2.17 for her 200 (i know this because she's swims out the nac swim club im a lifeguard there), and from what she said it depends on how much you get into it...i saw the interview as well and she said she was still in college, but she swims about 8 hours a week. i looked them up on Facebook and her twitter so that all i know but it sounds pretty interesting if not intense..!

ya i thought that to ha, but sure suppose the better she does the more funding the organization get

She is still in college (in Ireland) or was until recently. I dunno her 3k time as more so competes as a Miler in athletics meets but is a 5.0X/5.4X 1500/Miler and is heavily involved in her college athletics team

Modern pentathlon should have its own forum :)

Interesting to see if there's any informed contribution from the boardsies on this. I'd like to know a bit more. Certainly the NGB's website doesn't give any clue as to how one might start off in the sport - which I suppose maintains it's rather exclusive image.

I'd be more encouraged by the Brit's website that encourage beginners with a grasp of just one or two of the disciplines and which has regional development and stuff.

Whatever I can't see myself jumping on a horse at this stage.

I think its just landing its feet in ireland at the moment development wise.

i looked into her a but more with regards to kingQuez question about training and she's on the irish fencing squad and national champ so probably a full time job to get to where she is

If you are interested in joining I would think it easiest to start with fencing because its the hardest, through the different clubs (Pembrooke, Trinity, UCD, NUIM, UL etc etc). I believe the most action is through the Dublin based colleges!

As for picking up one or two of the disciplines my daughter did a biathlon (Primary school in Cork) during the year where they ran and swam, there was decent interest in that I think its just the difficulty of getting organisers. From my view I will get her to do it again if they are on next year, she loved it.
