I was born in 79 in romania.Very poor but we didnt knew what rich.I grew up in 90 s in Tranislvania.Topless girls, abortion, divorce, drink, smooking, strippclubs, etc, were normality. But the funny part it was that even if the abortion was free i never heard of any1 ever having it.I had acces to tones of drink but i never care about it and my grany was a tabacoo farmer and i never smooked 1 cigaret.Porno magazine were evreywhere but we werent intrested and talking anout sex or anything else was normal.I never hear of a priest abusing a child in romania.Very few people were divorcing even if the divorce was just like an application and 24 hours later you were divorced. It was a crazy world but not as crazy as Ireland. We didnt have cash but we didnt need it.
Then i landed in Dublin and i found out that evreythink i knew was weird. There were not stripp clubs in this country so the young lads to find out how a woman thing looks like,no dirty magazine,no drinking under 18,no smooking under 18,no divorce,no abortion,no sex talk,no nothing. For a while i belived i am in the vatican over here, evreything was bad!
But then spain is full of irish people having sex on the streets like mad, eating drugs and doing all the crazy things!
So who are you you irish people? Are you the church addicts, having no sex be4 mariage,no drinking,no smooking,no watching pornografy, not talking about sex,a generation of angels or you are the mad people abusing evreything when u are away?
It is a shame to like sex, drink and smooks in ur own country so you have to go to other country to do that and pretend you are an angel home?
You tell kids to dont smooke, drink, take drugs, have sex, eat, etc, and they abuse evreything,is not better to let them decide?

Cool post, Yes Ireland is the land of hypocrites and sheep.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

While I'm not saying Ireland's a tad hypocritical, or at least it used to be anyway. It's a lot more open about sexuality and lots of other things these days and we also get drunk, and do vast amounts of drugs on our own streets, not just in Spain anymore!

However, you must have been living in a totally different 1980s Romania to Nicolae Ceaușescu regime that existed until 1989 then, I assume.

Meh we have our problems but we're really not bad a people or place at all.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

To reiterate what Solair said, we as a nation have only recently become a lot more liberal about sex and other such subjects. It has a lot to do with the power and influence of the church in this country drastically dwindling. I have my own suspicions that the Celtic Tiger and the resultant prosperity allowed us to enjoy better things in life and thus opened up a lot of vices that were previously unavailable.

I have to say though, your post comes across as quite condescending and arrogant. We may have our faults as a country and I'll be the first to say that there's a lot about Ireland that disappoints me. But we by no means pretend to be God-fearing angels that you assume us to be, at least not nowadays anyway.

Oh and as for your "no smoking, no drinking" bit, you've obviously not been here for too long if you really believe that. Drinking and smoking has been prevalent for decades now and shows no signs of stopping.

We tend to be more liberal when abroad, as is every other nationality almost. In a way, we become humanized - our desires, our vices and our human needs come out as opposed to being repressed at home. No one wants to shit on their own doorstep. :pac:
Essentially, Ireland has a small village mentality - and why wouldn't we? There are only four million of us. If I acted like a complete tool on O'Connell Street tonight, someone that knew someone else that went to school with me would see it and I'd be all over Facebook for being such a prat. The English do this too. Look at the behaviour of the British in Ibiza or Spain compared to nights out in their own country so it's not exclusive to us.

I love the Irish communities abroad - we should take that mentality home (bar pissing on the street because we have enough of that as is). I think the world would be a better place, well...Ireland would anyway. :pac:

I find it very difficult to take this post seriously---a few years back we heard horror stories about Romanian orphanages which were meant to exist because abortion was banned in Romania, certainly many many Irish people adopted Romanian babies. No drinking or smoking under 18 in Ireland!!!??? Come off it!! It is probably true that people "get up to more" when they go abroad, but that is not only true of the Irish.

The OP kinda answers its own question. When you have access to it the novelty wears off, it becomes acceptable, and no one baits an eyelid at it.

Ireland was controlled by the catholic church for so long, and dispite what the Goverment and the Constitution says, to an extent it still is. People were sheltered and protected from such vices, and as soon as they got a little access to it they went nuts. If the lot became legal and accepted, people would soon not make such a big scene of it.

In the meantime, any cheap flights to be had to Tranislvania?

Romania was controlled by the dictator Nicolae Caecesceu, for many many years--he totally banned abortion and refused to let women travel abroad for them, he set up "clubs" in schools where young children were encouraged to spy on their parents and report any "anti-government" views that they might have, he would have shops filled with plastic food, he would demolish all the farmhouses in a village and move all the residents into Ballymun styles blocks of flats in order to free up farmland---I am not Roman Catholic (I am C of I) but I would far rather how it was here when the Catholic Church had much more influence than it does now to how it was in Romania under Caecesceu any day.

I suspect once the 60+ generation die off, you'll see a sudden extremely sharp drop in the number of subscribers to the Catholic church's sermons.

That's not fair of you ! You say you grew up in Romania in the 90's & are claiming you where in a world of sex & drug's but you where well behaved.Yet you ask us all who we are because you see also well behaved Irish & their opposites albeit you use another country (spain) to justify this perceved contradiction. It's annoying that you are calling us two-faced & attempting to get us to justify our own unique nature after all we are a distinct group & like all groups of people we have our own way. An easy rebuttal would be keep your long noise out but hey we are all friend's us euro head's. So i'll go a bit deeper with you pal!

"We didnt have cash but we didnt need it"
Are you really romanian you seem to think in english! Really you had no cash & you never needed it that's perfect. What would you say made Romania like that also did you come here for work & to get some of our cash & if so why?

"Then i landed in Dublin and i found out that evreythink i knew was weird. There were not stripp clubs in this country so the young lads to find out how a woman thing looks like"
Are you connecting strip club's with sex education ,are you annoyed we did not have them open when you arrived because our Irish kid's were not been thought enough about sex, Well even if that was just bonkers to you I hope you soon changed your mind because look around we seem to have populated our Island fine without young boy's knowing what a woman's thing's look like. In Ireland Men have sex with Woman why would young boy's need to?

"It is a shame to like sex, drink and smooks in ur own country so you have to go to other country to do that and pretend you are an angel home?"

The way you describe sex is just plain bonkers "in the streets" i don't know any Irish woman that would support that idea so therefore Stop telling us we like it. Drink has it's place & we have always built one time after time for that occasion p.s no kid's allowed ( aint that just weird) that's the way we like it. Smooks no one likes them they are just plain addicted to nicotine and imo everyone would like to see a full out ban.
Who are you referring to as the shameful angels?
Listen not all of us are the same but you know we have alter ego's.
Do you think it best we all act out our deepest sex & drug fantasies just so it's more to your liking weather that be because it's what your use to or be it you prefer us to be more readable as a people.Sigmund Freud once said of the Irish: “this is one race of people for whom psychoanalysis is of no use whatsoever.”

No, the Germans drink too much and are tight with money, that's why they invented Lidl and Aldi's drink section!

Having been to germany a few times the shops over there are just crazy. The sell the most random collection of things i've ever seen. I was in a cafe that had a lingerie section down the back, a newsagent that had a sex shop in it, and a donut shop that also sold suitcases and hand bags. I also seen a mercedes dealership that had a bar in the showroom!:D
To be honest i saw very little evidence of them being tight with their money, they just spend it differently to us.

Also OP you say you grew up in Transalvania, surrounded by semi naked women? Did they only come out at night by any chance?

The prices is Lidl and Aldi in Germany are not that much different to the rest if the supermarkets like Penny, Toom, Edeka, Rewa, etc It's Irish supermarkets being so over priced that make them look cheap!

Beer is cheap in general and can be gotten cheaper from a trink markt. I can get a 6 pack of Staropramen in my local supermarket for around €3.50 and get money back for the empties.

And it's not that Germans are tight with their money, they just don't spend what they don't have or won't buy anything on credit. They would much rather save for it than have to pay back with interest.
