How to connect old VCR to new TV

    Hi there, hope I've selected the right place to ask. Just bought new Samsung TV. I've successfully got Free-to-air, and Saorview running but struggling with connecting an old VCR which worked on my old CRT set although I never could get the VCR to record either input (analogue TV/Sat) while being able to watch the other. It was only possible to watch analogue TV while recording the sat but not vice-versa. I also want to connect an existing DVD/digital amplifier but that's not a priority.

    The VCR has:-

    TV in from antenna
    TV out to TV set
    LINE-1 (EURO AV) connector
    LINE-2 (SLV-SE730G/I only)/LINE-3 (SLV-SE830G only) connector
    AUDIO Out L and R

    The TV

    1 x Scart (which I've used to connect the Sat box) connecting via an adaptor to Ext (RGB)
    4 x HDMI
    1 x DVI
    Component connection
    Digi audio out (Optical)
    Antenna socket (which I've used for the Saorview feed)

    It's all a bit of a mystery to me I'm afraid. From elsewhere on Boards it seems that an alternative to VCR isn't clear. I was thinking digital recorder with hard-drive but the store suggested I wait a while longer to see what comes along.

    Many thanks,

    Pat

    you dont say if the samsung has an analogue tuner or the model no, but if it has an analoogue then you can view the vcr via coax ie tv lead, put a tape in vcr and press play then go to manual tune on tv and scan until u find tape playing, store it,

    the sky box has 2 scarts, one tv and one for vcr, so connect to vcr, then to record select ext 1 on vcr, record, then playabck via coax. but best to get a sky box with hdmi and have better pic quality and free up scart,

    gb

    Many thanks for quick reply. I'll try that.
    The TV is a Samsung UE40D5520. The TV system is described as Analogue B/G, DK, L, I dependent on country selection. Digital DVB-T2/DVB-C. The Sat box is a Technomate with 2 scarts TV and VCR/Aux.

    I'll look around for a HDMI box.

    With your current equipment, it should work as follows:

    TV SCART<->VCR SCART LINE 1
    VCR SCART LINE 2<->SAT TV

    EDIT: like this:

    With the VCR in standby, it should pass the sat audio/video signal straight to the TV. I had a similar setup at one stage. The VCR had to be switched out of standby and set back to standby to allow the signal pass (or could be left on as well, necessary if recording). I've seen another VCR which needed the VCR constantly out of standby to continue to allow the signal through.

    If your TV had 2 SCARTs, you'd connect the "SAT TV SCART" to the TV, and the "SAT VCR/AUX SCART" to the VCR (with VCR SCART also connected to the other TV SCART).

    Thank you very much. I'll try it and let you know.
