So I just got a job offer, which is great. However the start date is a month away and my boss is out on holiday for a week or so. What is done thing in this case? Do I go to another senior member of my team to hand in my notice? Go to HR?

How well do you know your boss? Would it be appropriate to talk to the boss while on holidays? Is the boss likely to phone while away?

What notice is required from you or considered normal in your industry? Is your employer likely to make a counter offer?

I get on alright with the boss but its not the type of relationship where I'd call him outside of work hours so it is tricky. The notice period in my job is 1 month so I can't hang around until he gets back. They might make a counter offer but I'd be turning it down anyway. What a pain, I was hoping this would be clean and clear.

    Can you inform his manager?

If you are not playing games, then just put the letter in to HR. and say sorry to your boss when he comes back, explaining you could not wait

I'd hand in the notice to his manager. He or she can then choose to ring your boss while he's on leave if they want. If your boss' boss is someone who you'd never have any contact with, then HR would do.
