S.F. and the Irish Flag

Now I know I'll stir it up with this but have S.F. stolen the public's right to display the Irish flag outside their own homes?

Lets face it if an average person put the tri colour outside their home they would draw unwanted attention upon themselves.

Why would you want to fly a tri-colour outside your house? Seems like a waste of time to me.

Hate sinn fein. But the flag was supposed to be an all Ireland one. There is equal space for the orange order as for the green on the flag. Problem is the orange have never accepted it,

Sinn Fein are the biggest load of absolute trash in this country.

Their supporters don't even know what they're voting for. All they see are Irish flags and think it actually connects with Irish Vs. English. Sinn Fein are an authoritarian socialist movement, hell bent on destroying all that their supporters love about Ireland - it's history, it's traditions, it's culture. So that the great Soviet Empire can rise in Ireland, nationalism and patriotism must be discarded. Collins or the old IRA of the 1920's never died for socialism. Our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution DOES NOT say we wanted Socialism. Do these people that vote Sinn Fein actually know one thing about politics?

    Bloody hell.

The Irish flag is not a decoration and should be treated with respect.

I never said it was, and to be honest it's the current use by S.F. that I find disrespectful

Well seeing as you'd have to hang it out there for no reason. Then take it in every night seeing as its illegal to fly the flag under darkness. I'm assuming that anyone that would go to the effort of putting up a tri colour would be somewhat patriotic and wouldn't break this law.

Why would you want to do it? People know we are in Ireland. I see the flag as a symbol to distinguish Ireland when it need to be, ie foreign politics, sport ect... but Ireland or Irishness does not need to be highlighted in Ireland.

Must be seriously running out of things to criticise Sinn Féin about OP :) They are an Irish Republican party. Why would they not fly the Irish flag?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭Notorious97

If people want to fly our flag in their gardens then I say let them, Americans fly it in theirs not all but ones who are patriotic

I don't see the problem with a political party using it either, back during the war of independence Sinn fein used it, I am well aware this is not the same Sinn fein but they are a republican party which identify themselves as Irish republicans and if they wish to use this flag that's fine.

Now, moving on I bought the new iPhone today with three happy days :)

I never said that people would do it for no reason, and yes I agree that it has to be taken down every night. But there are people in this country that would like to have their national flag outside their home if not for everyday but for special reasons. Although I disagree we need to display our "irishness" displayed in Ireland we as a nation are on our knees at the moment and we need something to boost us.

How is putting an Irish flag outside your house going to 'boost' us?

If you want to hang a flag outside your house feel free, nobody is going to stop you. Sinn Fein are a republican party and there fore use the tri-colour alot. But so do Fianna Fáil and I think they've ballsed up this county a lot more than Gerry and his pals.

Attention? From whom may I ask? Do you think people seriously give a fúck about who flies what outside their home? I reckon most people have more serious matters to worry about, than the petty issue of flags. Jesus Christ OP, get with the times will ya.

I agree. I would look unfavourably at someone with an Irish flag outside their house, as if it was a leaning toward something sinister. However, if I saw another country eg an Italian flag outside an Italians house, I would think that they were just demonstrating patrionism. The crazies in the North have done the same with the Union Jack. Maybe it is time for Ireland to rethink the flag. Irish people have the right to a flag that isn't associated with terrorism...

WTF do you mean "they are not my Irish Republican Party?" Just because you don't agree with their priciples doesn't mean that you can reclassify them in some way. What they stand for is alot clearer than what Fianna Fail, Fine Gael or Labour stand for. Sometimes it seems that those guys disagree with eachother because "that's what they're supposed to do"
