A good friend of mine has recently graduated as a Physics & Maths teacher and I would love to buy him a good present that he might use personally and during his career.

I was thinking of maybe an ideal physics gadget that would be useful, nothing huge and maybe a great physics book to use as a teacher....

Would anyone have any recommendations on an ideal gift, Thanks

You could get him a subatomic particle plushie toy. He could use them to show students what a certain particle would look like if it were a plushie:

+1 to this suggestion....Not really good for use in school, but an excellent gift.

True, but can't you just download this, free?

    Yes, you probably can.

But I'm slightly old-fashioned where books are concerned. I like to be able to see and touch the book.

I would love if someone gave me one of them. :D My sister has a degree in microbiology and I got her plush E.Coli for Christmas one year.

Also +1 on the slinky. Or how about a Newton's Cradle?

Thanks for all the replies, gives me a few things to think about. Hopefully he wouldn't have any of those books. I looked at website of those plushie's don't fully understand them, but sure he knows all too well about them,

    A putt-putt boat.

Plenty of physics involved (phase changes, momentum, hydrodynamics). See if he can explain why the forward momentum created by the exit of steam is not cancelled out by the water being sucked in on the reverse cycle.

Or google "physics toys" for many more fun but educational stuff.

That book '5 Easy Lessons' - is that a book that would be in his school already? Thanks

Not sure what your budget is but my parents bought me one of these when I got my physics degree:

Thanks for all the ideas. That choaticpendulum looks cool, bit out of my price range though. Thanks everyone

Not really sure how these would be useful, I'd say they'd be a fun way to waste some time though!
