Astra 1.4 Headgasket

I've to replace a headgasket for a friend.

The car is a 1.4 16v ecotec and I know well that they are prone to failing.

The car was bought just over a year ago and the head gasket went a couple of weeks after buying it.
The car is now out of warranty and it's gone again.

My question is, will the job be successful the second time around?

I intend to get head skimmed, replace water pump, timing belt, thermostat and head bolts to prevent it happening again.

I've heard of people replacing the engine with a secondhand one because of headgasket failure. Should I attempt to repair it or should I opt for a secondhand lump instead??

I did a head gasket on my sisters 00 Astra last year. The car has since been sold but I know it's still running fine. I also had a thread in this forum about it....

Thanks for the link. It's nice to get a look at how the job is done before I attempt it!!!

If the previous repair only lasted less then a year then it unlikely it was repaired properly.

Have the head pressure tested and only have it skimmed if its needed. The engineering shop will be able to check it.

Replaceing the head bolts and tighening them correctly is just as important too.

There is no reason that an engne would have to be replaced or wouldn't run correctly after having a head gasket change once it was done correctly.

My guess is that because it was a warranty job that it was just slapped together to keep it running.
Thanks, I'll take those points into consideration.
