3 weeks to 10km- Advice please!

    Hi All,

I am hoping to run the ladies mini marathon 10km in Galway in 3 weeks and was just wondering what I should be doing with 3 weeks to go? Basically I have been jogging/running(?!) on and off for a few years now and have done a few 10kms before but my best time was just under 58mins. I used to get terrible stitches on the races and realised it was down to shallow breathing (was never too prone to them on training runs but think maybe I got tense on the runs) so I have mastered better breathing and the breathing out on the left foot fall. At the moment I could do with dropping 1 and a half to two stone:eek: so I know the excess weight is a big hindrance to my running but am hoping the running will get the weight down.

So I had been averaging at 2-3 runs per week for 6 wks up to 2 wks ago. I would generally do 3-4 miles and incorporate a good few hills. I had been doing some lamppost sprints and found it was helping. I was at 10 minute mile (which was a big improvement for me and also considering the hills!)

I got a sinus infection and havnt ran in 2 weeks, I finally feel ready to get back at it now and was just wondering what I should do to maximise my 10km training. I have been walking 3-5 brisk miles every day over the past 2 weeks so am hoping my muscles havnt completely seized. Thanks in advance:)

I'd say get a couple of longer but slower runs in, 6-7 miles, over the next two weekends. Forget the time, just get the miles in your legs. In the midweek continue your 3-4 milers, maybe running the final mile or so nice and hard.

Rest in the last few days before the race and arrive at the starting post fresh.

    Well done, you're doing great.
