Does anyone know much about this?

Look at the video of Dr. Dean Burk on the website link below.

I am seriously pissed off that our Government are still adding this crap to our water!

If you are too stupid to brush your teeth, that should be your own problem, not everyone else's!

brushing your teeth or not has nothing to do with intaking enough flouride for your teeth.

Yay! A flouride thread! Haven't seen one of these in a while.:)

Correct me if I'm mistaken but isn't flouride largely effective at preventing cavities on a topical basis?

How does ingesting it reduce cavities?

its to do with the remineralization of the tooth surface though your saliva. dental cavaties are caused by sort of tug of war going on between your own natural tooth resurfacing & growth process's and the acid created by bacteria living on your tooth surface.
keep your teeth reasonably clean and there is less acid production so you get less chance of cavaties, but when you dont keep your teeth clean the bacteria using begins to move from the surface into the tooth itself given time visible signs appear and bam! you've got a nice big dentist appointment.

Fouride is thought to help in the remineralization of the tooth surface the logic behind it is that if flouride helps your body rebuild and repair after acid erosion than having more of it in your body helps your teeth. thats my understanding of why flouride is added to drinking water.

Yeah I totally get that, but my understanding it was most effective topically, if that's the case then why would flouride in water provide additional protection to brushing twice a day with a flouride toothpaste?

Xylitol is great for preventing caries too, probably more so than flouride.

I suck on little xylitol mints throughout the day, apparently it prevents the growth of the bacteria that causes plaque and it encourages the production of saliva which carries the minerals necessary to repair enamel.

Maybe we should be giving children little mints in school to help their dental health?

Ok even I am beginning to wonder now - why are there so many fluoride threads popping up lately ?

The people behind the website quoted in the OP are behind a concerted effort to raise awareness of this issue in the mainstream media. Jim Corr is urging people to phone liveline, get onto presidential candidates and so on.

I'm going to leave this thread to the mods of the forum to deal with as they see fit, but I'll just remind people that we won't stand for thread after thread being opened on this. We won't stand for abuse - by people on either side of the argument - and we won't stand for soapboxing.

Jaysus, Jim Corr is involved? That lends the campaign such credibility!:)

On a serious note, although I haven't read all the research, I am concerned about the possible effect of excess flouride on the thyroid. I know some areas' water supplies contain high levels of flouride naturally, but I think you'll agree natural isn't always good.

There's no association with thyroid cancer but there are associations with elevated TSH in children (1) There's a plausible biological mechanism for this and the results have been replicated in rat studies although probably at much higher concentrations to get the same results in a shorter period of time.

I'm trying to find any other studies examining the association or lack thereof but I haven't come across any.

Can anyone put my mind at rest?

(It's also worth noting that tea is quite high in flouride too, so could flouride toothpaste + flouridated water + 3/4 cups of tea put you over the safe consumption threshold?)

Is it ok to say that If Jim Corr is involved, then it is enough evidence to keep the flouride additions going?

In answer to the op's question (we know it was a question because there were two question marks) -

Can I ask a serious question of those who claim fluoride does damage to us? Am I right in believing the anti-flouride lobby that we are one of the few countries in Europe that adds fluoride? If so what are the illnesses we get that other Europeans don't get? How much more common are they in Ireland compared to the rest of Europe? Do people in Ireland with group water schemes have fluoride added and if not do they suffer less illnesses?

I don't want a list of the possible illnesses or the effects of various chemicals in rats or where ever. I want the actual figures of the illnesses per head of population in non-fluoride countries compared to Ireland.

Here's a link to a systemic review of water fluoridation:
    Review

The OP may find this line interesting:
'Overall, no clear association between water fluoridation and incidence or mortality of bone cancers, thyroid cancer or all cancers was found.'
