A right of way question...

I was coming from St Marys Place North (not far from the old wax museum) turning right onto Berkeley Road with a green light. A mini bus was coming from Western Way turning left onto Berkeley Road, I would assume also with a green light.

I have looked at google maps and Western Way has traffic lights also. I thought they would have to give way to me as I’m coming from their right?

I am curious as its one of the many fun times I had driving through town at night. Thanks!

It depends, he could have jumped the lights.
Generally when you're turning right you have to yield to traffic coming in the opposite direction even if they're turning left unless road signs/markings/lights say otherwise.

If you both were stopped then I feel you should yield, if you were in moving traffic then it would depend on the speed and position of both vehicles, e.g if you were already crossing before the minibus arrived you would have priority.

The other fellow had the right of way because he was turning left.....

RotR section on Right of Way, P.99...

If you plan to turn right at a junction and a vehicle from the opposite direction wants to turn into the same road, the vehicle that is turning left has right of way. If yours is the vehicle turning right, you must wait for the other vehicle to turn first.

What would happen if both were turning right. Who gives way?

I always thought when in doubt you give way to the ones coming from the right.

Since you drive you should know this already.

When in doubt, you can't go wrong by giving way to everyone.

    Very true!

Thank god I hardly ever have to drive into the main part of town, its a nightmare. Give me back roads and drives to the country instead.

The junction is slightly offset, with the OP's entry coming after the Western Way one.

It's a tricky junction alright. I've used it from both sides, and would normally expect to have the right-of-way coming from Western Way, tbh. Obviously, if the other vehicle forged ahead, I would yield.

When you put it like that, the tiny bit where the vehicle from the western way turn would be on the road first would give it the right of way.

Its one of the many places where the light sequence would need to be altered. That way there would be no confusion.
