Occasional foul smell outside house

I sometimes get the odd whiff out the back of my house, which I moved to about 6 months ago. We can also get it the odd time inside the house in the hallway, which has a toilet off it. Its not as bad indoors though.

Just to fill you in, the house has a septic tank in the back garden, off to the extreme right hand side about approx 50ft from the house. There are also 2 pipes coming out of my grass about 25ft from the house, although these are to the left of the garden, quite a bit away from the septic tank. Not even sure if they are in line with underground piping or drainage systems, but when you look down them you can see liquid of some description!

Getting back to the smell, it comes and goes and seems not to be related to toilets being used. Can happen randomly. I spoke to a friend who is generally handy and he told me my soil stack or vent is only 2 inches when it should be 4. If I get this changed do any of you experts think this would solve my problem?

I am getting a little miffed with it now, especially with the good weather coming as I am afraid it will affect my enjoyment of what is a very nice back garden/decking area. Can't invite friends round for a BBQ and have them gagging, can I:D

I would check that the drains are clear and whether the tank needs emptying.

Found a receipt from previous owners stating that tank was emptied about this time last year, so have to assume its genuine.

Is there a vent stack near where the smell is?
