    Hi All,

Wondering if anyone could give some advice on this bike?
I'm only looking to do short cycles and maybe some leisurely ones on the weekend.

Is this bike alright? Also I don't get the sizes is 19" ok for a 5'10 12stone adult?

    Thanks
    Trax TR.1 Rigid Mens Mountain Bike - 19" f

It may be OK for a while, but it is just as likely to be a piece of crap that causes no end of trouble.

It will be about as much fun to cycle as a €20 guitar is to play.

No, don't buy it. The wheels will go out of true, the gears will stop working after a few weeks, the brakes will be crap and might actually snap off if you use them too much and a lot of the nuts and bolts will come loose and refuse to tighten because the finish is ****e and the threads striped.

There have been a few threads from people who bought similar bikes and found that they broke all the time and wanted to know was that normal, for that price it is.

A few of the posters on here are mechanics in shops and can tell you all sorts of horror stories about trying to fix these aboninations. Think about it, 18 gears, a frame, fork, headset bearings, bottom bracket bearings, saddle and finishing kit, tubes and tyres, delivery, labour costs, 72 spokes, hub bearings, seat clamp etc etc, do you think they can make all that to any sort of standard and still make a profit.

If you only have 99e to spend maybe you could borrow a bike from a friend or perhaps there's an old bike in a shed that you could use.
Save up another 100e or so and might find something nice second hand. Another 200e and you start to edge into new bike territory.

If you plan on cycling often then this bike is a waste of 99e because it won't last and you'll never use it and it won't be worth much second hand.
If you only plan on cycling the odd time then a bike of this calibre still won't last. At that price point they're hopeless from the get-go.

Sure if you're spending €499 you'd be in Giant Defy territory.

Im always underwhelmed by the Giant defy (they entry models).

    As for the Trax,

Id rather eat the two €2 coins and then after wipe my arse with the two €20s, the €50 and the €5.

Bike is a ball of ****e.

Alright Kona, lets say you had a budget of €200, what would you recommend to a low mileage friend? Assuming the OP wants something in the near future and is willing to double his initial budget, what would you suggest? (consider this a low budget/lightweight gauntlet being laid down :D)

    Is it e200 or e400?:pac:

Id go with the subway 1 in the middle for e300ish. Its not amazing or world changing but it will do the job.

I wouldnt reccomend anything for under e300, Im not doing myself or the person asking any favours. People dont understand just how **** these BSO are.

If you only have e200 to spend your looking secondhand, however youd wanna bring somebody who can spot a crock :)

I know very very little about mountain bikes, but i'm quite sure that thats a pile of dog poo. You're heart will be broke fixing the thing after a few weeks.

Yeah I agree , €300 seems to be the cut off point between a BSO and reliable bicycle. But to be honest If I had that much to spend I'd go second hand and get a far better bike.

I would agree second hand would be the way to go,but you have to be very careful what you buy and from where, every day I have people in with second hand bikes that theyve bought, even from some well known shops and the bikes still need a few hundred euros work to get them running properly!yesterday I had a guy come in with a Dawes 101 looked in good condition new front wheel and everything he paid 90 but the chain was completely worn out and bb had alot of play in it,why would a shop sell that on? Rant over ;)

All I'll say is, don't make the same mistake as I did. BSO's are not the way to go. You'll regret every minute of your cycle being afraid of what cheap component will mess up next.

The only good thing about it was that It taught me a nice bit about repairing bikes which I can now use on my new decent bike!

Also 19" is a pretty common frame so you'll find a decent enough second hand bike for 200-250.
