I went to the Tallaght meeting of the "We the citizens" initiative group on Wednesday night.

It is funded by Chuck Feeney's Atlantic Philanthropies organisation, so I was suspicious that it might be a front for a right-wing populist agenda, but in the event, the group at my table seemed like normal, nice liberal types.

Nevertheless, I am not hopeful that much will come of it. Is it a waste of time at this stage?

Think it was a good idea but the head of it accepting a seat on the senate has put question marks over it imo.
Anything that gets citizens more involved even if it just means discussing politics is a good thing. They intend to have a citizens assembly which will come up with ideas for political reform which should be interesting.

normal, nice liberal types, theres your problem, this is a rock the boat but not too hard dampening activity, its not about actually changing anything its about lobbying for the government to create its own citizen's commission, i'd say feeney is a liberal, and a dem but then left wing americans are right wing everywhere else and dems like to interfere in other countries as much if more then republicans.
