There's a one pump outfit in Ballymount (on the right hand side as you go from the Walkinstown Roundabout towards the Industrial Estate) that only sells diesel at 134.9c. There's a Maxol station 200 yds away selling for 143.9c! There are usually queues but I don't know if the pumps are NSAI approved (so you're not paying 134.9 for 0.95L!).

http://pumps.ie/ is a great website for finding out where the cheapest fuel nearby is.

That garage is currently the cheapest in Dublin @ 146.6, though the price is a few days old.

    You what now ... ?

Of course they have to be calibrated, you cant sell fuel without a certificate.

Petrol is 1.46, Diesel is 1.36 IIRC

I got some on Tuesday, I go there most of the time because they give money off vouchers when you buy petrol too. There was a huge queue this afternoon though, so traffic leading up to it was a nightmare.

Worked in a garage many moons ago and I don't remember them being checked that often and I'm not sure if you are fined if they are off because you can argue its down to usage... i have noticed quite a few garages these days don't actually start pumping until you are maybe 50cent in (you can feel it in the pump when it starts dispensing). I'm not saying this is a deliberate scam and it's not a big deal if you fill up each time, but if you put in €10/ €15 on a regular basis it adds up.

    Total and utter bullsh1t.

Why oh why do so many people make up crap with no basis except their own stupid assumptions with no hard concrete facts?

Nsai can and do make regular un-announced inspections nationwide on all days. If their seal is tampered with, the garage is heavily fined - €10000+

    Easy tiger!

What he is saying has legs. I know of a guy in who was filling a container and the the pump had hit 50 cent before it started to fill with petrol. Of course it's illegal and checks are carried out a bit like car tax is checked but yet thousand's of people drive without it.

    That can only be if

    - the shop attendant hadn't zeroed put the last sale (as he is meant to do from the till) or

    - there was an error with that pump

There is no way any petrol company would have a systemic scam like this in place as they would lose their business overnight, and the directors would leave themselves open to fines & prosecution & fraud.

Do people honestly think that petrol pumps are infallible? Its a machine they wear, they break just like any other machine and they need regular servicing and calibrating.

The reading on the pump just means that the meter pistons have moved up and down a certain amount which should assuming the pump is primed and operation perfectly mean that a proportinal volume +- 0.X% of fuel has been dispensed.

It is a statistical certainty that at some point there will be a problem that means a pump won't dispense the appropriate amount. No conspiracy theories here.

Its not like car tax - its like a ESB meter seal.

If it is in anyway tampered with, you get heavy fine - not a slap on the wrist like you do for car tax.

50c is 1/3 of a litre - the same as the liquid in a can of coke and about the amount the will fit into the length of a hose. - Does your "guy" ever check to see how much fuel continues to dispense after he has stopped the pump?

Oh yeah - he didn't think of that.

The NSAI are exceptionally strict. When I had store which had a weigh machine, I had them checked for accuracy twice in 12 months with no notification. (yes thay passed both times)

There's 3 places close to each other, on the old n1, just south of the airport.

Driving south, place on the left (just past alsaa), 135.9 diesel

Continue south, through Collin town lights, just past the Carlton hotel, on the right is Great Gas, 139.9 diesel, 149.9 petrol

Almost immediately across the road, place a bit like a truck stop. 138.8 diesel

137.9. In the self-service on the old airport road & the one across from it down the little lane.

They now also do petrol self-service, 147.9

You need Visa/MC/Laser as it is self-service only. No cash or Amex

Not bull****, I worked in a garage for 3 years and never once got checked while I was there and during the summer that was 6 days a week - how is that a stupid assumption or not based on fact? I was there, you weren't so you are the one who is making assumptions. I guarantee that there are certain garages that the fuel does not start pumping until at least 40 cent in. Im not saying this is deliberate just that both my father and I have noticed this in our local garage.

Also if the NSAI are so infallible how come there was a big discussion on Matt Copper last week about garages cropping up selling laundered Diesel?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 646 ✭✭✭end a eknny

the petrol station where i live is prepay with automatic cut-off but it will go to an extra 30 or 40 cent but then when the next person fills it jumps up to 30 or 40 cent

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,871 ✭✭✭Karen23

The last few times we got petrol we went to Mc Kee Ave in Finglas , Gulf Oil next to the old ESB. 148.9 for petrol & 138.9 for diesel. The cheapest I've found around that area.

Unsubstantiated rubbish. Do you know how the NSAI work? Have you ever seen the seals on the metering system? - I doubt it very much.

You worked for a few hours a day in 2 1/2 months of the year - the NSAI work 12 months of the year!

If a station has a long record of compliance and a proper audited service system in place, there may be no need to check it for 2 years.

If the seal are in any way tampered with, the station is fined, end of story, no ifs or buts.

How so? I worked there, do I need to post payslips from all the years, month, weeks and hours that I worked?
Do you know how the NSAI work? Have you ever seen the seals on the metering system? - I doubt it very much.
What has that got to do with the price of chips? I never said the seals were tampered with or said I knew the system? I merely pointed out that in some garages the pumps are not calibrated correctly. This may be due to needing a service or general wear and tear but it does happen.
You worked for a few hours a day in 2 1/2 months of the year - the NSAI work 12 months of the year!
Now who is making unsubstantiated assumptions. I generally worked 22 hours during the weekend for 3 years and then usually 50 hours a week from June to September... as assistant manager when i was on the premises.
If a station has a long record of compliance and a proper audited service system in place, there may be no need to check it for 2 years.
And in the 2 years if the pumps are being regularly used round the clock, 365 days a year they won't be susceptible to wear and tear? They are sooooooo well constructed and calibrated that they are immune to general wear and tear? Jesus if that is the case they should go into automobile manufacturer as they would clean up with that sort of technology.
If the seal are in any way tampered with, the station is fined, end of story, no ifs or buts.
IF they are tampered with and IF they are caught. If a machine is not calibrated correctly and its benefitting the garage owner they may decide not to service it and argue the case that they didn't tamper with it and its just wear and tear and accidental OR they may not service it because it's cheaper not to service it.

Also, if everything is so highly regulated, how come there are garages selling laundered Diesel to unsuspecting customers?

Yes I do know how it works and I've seen the inside of the pumps systems and a close friend had a station in wicklow from 1995 to 2001.

Sorry, but my assistant managers would not know an iota about things that go on in the back end of my business and I doubt if any fuel station employee would know either.

Pumps must be serviced regularly, they must be servcied by an approved contractor and thay are checked without notice. Checks can take place early morning or late evening. The seals must be 100% intact and show no signs of tampering.

NSAI weights & measures does not test for quality of fuel - its a weights and measures operation.

If you have any question or are in doubt of the measurement of any fuel pump, you can make a complaint to the NSAI and they will check it out.

There is currently 5 cent a litre off petrol at Tesco if you spend €50 in store. Petrol in my local tesco store was €1.48.? reduced to €1.43 with the 5 cent discount. Since I was spending €50 anyway it worked out well.

The price of petrol is one thing anyone got any opinions on the quality of the fuel?

I have an old CR-V with heavy enough fuel consumption and my nearest garages are a topaz and an applegreen - if I fill up in Topaz I tend to get an extra 25 - 30 miles out of the tank over what I would get from the applegreen fuel.

Top in Navan are selling Petrol & Diesel at €136.9 , thats 8c a litre cheaper on the cheapest petrol in Dublin in Dublin 8 and a crazy 14c a litre cheaper than the dearest in Baldoyle , if they can sell it for €136.9 why cant any garages in Dublin do it ?

Thanks again for the tip Danwhite, got some this afternoon. It's still 142.3 and I got a .40c discount voucher too.

I find the mileage quite good with this petrol, I'd say it's as good as Esso but not as good as Topaz.
